I formatted my pc and installed Windows XP SP2 a few days ago. I am having problems. From folder options I choose SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS, then I clicked apply and then ok. I tried this a number of times to no avail, and the hidden files just won't show.

Could someone please tell me how I could make the Hidden Files appear.

Thanks--Much Appreciated

If you look further down in the Folder Options, there's also an option to display system files. If a file is marked as a system file, it won't show up even if you have selected to show hidden files.

Thnx Crab56 for the link

This is the proposed solution

Go to the following registry key:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Window s\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Adva nced\Folde r\Hidden\SHOWALL

Delete the value CheckedValue. (Its type should be REG_SZ and data should be 2.)

Create a new DWORD value called CheckedValue (same as above, except that the type is REG_DWORD). Modify the value data to 1 (0x00000001).

This should let you change the "Hidden Files and Folders" option.

Could someone explain how to do this??? I don't really know (sry n00b!!)

How do I get to the registry key??

Thanks

First - be careful - create a restore point first.

Select start > run > type in "regedit" and your registry editor comes up like windows explorer. From there open the folders they give you ( HKLM is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ) in the right pane of correct folder you will see D Word entries. Right click in the right pane and select new > D Word Value.

Print out the instructions in the link so u can read as u work on your computer. You can do it - read my sig Good Luck

Open "My Computer" - right click your DVD drive > select autoplay tab and pick action to take. Assuming you are running XP. And thanks for the comments !

Try this. If no luck then make sure firmware for drive is latest version, look for updated drivers, uninstall and reinstall drivers.
If that fails then I tell the wife I must buy a new computer with latest technology. This has not worked so far but I keep trying

Thanks So much (AGAIN!!) Crab !!

The AutoFix tool from the link you gave me worked. It took some time time but now, the autoplay for both my drives, flash disk, portable hard disk, and PSP is back up. The autoplay is now working.
Thanks again.

PS: Another question

After showing hidden files from the menu, thumbs.db (a file) started appearing everywhere, and making moving or copying files a hassle, as the pc keeps asking if I want to move them or not.
Does the system need these, and if not how can I get rid of them??

Thanks again--U rock man!!!!!!!!

That's normal. The following comes straight from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thumbs.db.

Thumbs.db is a hidden file used by Microsoft Windows operating system that stores a cache for Windows Explorer's thumbnail view. Thumbs.db is saved in each directory that contains pictures or movies.

Windows stores thumbnails of graphics files in the Thumbs.db file, including the following formats: JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIF, PDF, and HTML. Each thumbnail created in a directory is represented in this database file as a small JPEG file, regardless of the file's original format. Each folder with initiated thumbnail views (that is where they have displayed a Thumbnails or Filmstrip view in Windows Explorer) will have a Thumbs.db file.

Is it possible to modify the font in windows.

By this I mean the font that is displayed in the start menu, and in the folders.

Thanks

While this is possible I don't recomend it. There are packs that will replace windows files but this can either work or leave you crying. There is also windowsblinds I believe it called. It works but it's not free. Because of one of the packs I still have a functional computer but I don't like the pack, and I can't revert back.

I have not had any trouble with changing fonts in windows.
right click on desktop > properties > appearence tab > advanced.
use the drop down menu to select items to change, when you pick something with text, then the font menu becomes available.

changing folder icons on the desktop is OK too. Right click on desktop icon > properties > customize > change icon ( select icon files ) works pretty good, theres also a free site you can make your own icons out of images.
