Hey guys, i was wondering if there was any miniscule chances of bits and pieces of data being lost through the shuffle when compressing and de-compressing files for archival purposes.

I like to compress something thats 1gb to something like 650mb, so it'll fit in a cd-r
which gets me thinking, Is too much compression bad?

usually as long as your using a good compressor like winrar (a must have ) then you'll be
fine usually archives that are corrupted can be un-corrupted using the software that they were originally created in, i rarely every (once or twice) have gotten a corrupt achieve while compressing, i prefer to achieve in rar shown in this thread, if you winrar you can set it to check if the the achieve you just compressed lost any data or is corrupt

when compressing big files people split them up into many pieces of usually one size

1gb to 650mb is fine

almost everyone has the trail version, you can zip, un zip, rar unrar, repair files, view them in there achieve state with out unzipping/unraring them, all achieves are supported

10x better then winzip, most of the archived files now are rar, i dont believe winzip can unrar, its faster, easier to use, and gives you much more options its become the standard, you'll see very few people using winzip these days!

Just to add, there aren't any (legal) "free versions" of WinRAR.
