does deleting the partitions and such on a hard drive REALLY delete everything on it? ive been hearing things like you can still recover things and such and i want a clear answer on this.

also, if you cant 'really delete' a file without something like a software, how can i retrieve it? things like stuff i deleted to the recycling bin?

no, it doesn't really delete anything but repartitioning the drive can make it difficult to recover files. The files are still there (unless overwritten) but the space on the disc is marked as usable.

there are plenty of apps that will allow you to recover files you emptied from the recycle bin, plus ones that will go deeper if need be.

you can retrieve it with many applications one would be (my favorite)
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloads/2196739/oo-formatrecovery]
many of these partition recovery or recycle bin recovery programs are booted at start from a cd or floppy

you can delete files on a hard drive completely with macafee shredder
which is very good(you cant recovery after the 7 passes it does, unless your pariniod then there is no reason to go to this extreme),

or a free tool that is not as good but still top -notch Avira UnErase Personal(http://www.free-av.com/antivirclassic/avira_unerase.html)

To completely wipe your drive, use this:
http://dban.sourceforge.net/
Burn the .ISO onto a disk. Boot with the disk and start the process. (Floppy and USB drive will also work)

This will delete EVERYTHING from ALL hard drives. So make sure to disconnect hard drives you do not want erased. The process takes a long time, but by the time its done not even the FBI or CIA will be able to recover data from your hard drive.

well if you want to do to that extreme just remember to do 7 passes with macafee shredder or any other app that supports a 7 pass systeme
after that not much can be found, actually nothing really

==============
RescueBox 4- you can recover lost files that have recently been deleted or have recently been corrupted

FormatRecovery 4- if you lost a paritian or have a corrupted disc from a bad format

Disc recovery 4- you dont want and dont need this, a product that does an even better job is included with the RescueBox 4

some other apps to do the job

You would be surprised what the cia/fbi can recover.. the only way to completely destroy the data on a drive is to physically dismantle it and smash the metal disk with a hammer..
A really good fire can have a similar effect.. raising the parts above their curie point will get rid of any magnetic information ;)

you guys really are afraid the CIA/FBI will break into your home and check your hard drive aren't you? get an electric magnet, thats what the
German hacker did when he saw the police at his door
