I have been reading with great interest the threads about updating firmware for my recorder. What I have put together is that it records at 1x and that there is no firmware upgrade for this unit. All the upgrades I have seen, both hacked and unhacked are for units whose SNs start with 4E. Would much appreciate it if someone could let me know if this is right or not. If there is a upgrade out there any info on obtaining it would be appreciated.

What model 04 is it [R04 or RHD04]
Don?t want the serial # on the tag
Turn the unit on and go to Setup.
At the very top there will be a SN #
What are they [complete #]
Do you want this unit hacked
Is faster speed the reason for firmware upgrade

Aloha LCSHG, and thanks for the reply.
Model: R04
SN#: 4E01-1840-0086-G288 (103-010D)
Reason: Transfering home videos to DVD. Speed not critical. Note on Memorex 16x Discs indicated Firmware upgrade necessary.
Hacked: Sounds interesting but don't know enough to decide if it something I could use.
Thanks again, look forward to your reply Gordon

The SN # would indicate firmware version 086 and a 451s drive. I feel they are original
These units were a liteon clone and very good but did develop problems with the DVD drive. [some did not seem to]
Are you experiencing any problems, with the drive at all.
The use of 16x disks should not be a problem as the unit operates at 1x real time and 4x in copy, and that?s it, no matter the speed of the drive or disks. I use Verbatim 16x disks and they work fine in any machine 451s or 1693 replacements
I would upgrade the firmware to 098 Rev B [Hacked or not] your choice either work equally well
They and info for both, also general info, are at this site
http://www.ncc2315.com/ilo/
That site is very reliable
A hack is for analog MV as in most VHS tapes. Home videos should not be a problem
For other info on the ilo [or the Liteon as the ilo is a liteon clone] check these sites
http://www.techolio.com/
http://www.normediasolutions.com/portfolio/
Note
I have some 10 of the liteon/ilo units Most with replaced drives and firmware from the above site

Have been following the "ILO Recorder Firmware Update Instructions"'
Have decided that the "098 Rev B Hacked" is the end goal. Tried to load the "1097 Ver. 451S" first since it is a system and drive update, and then to load the "1098 Rev B MV/LP Hacked"
on the Recorder:
Clicked on "setup"
Clicked on "system"
Clicked on "default"
Put CD (brand new with no other files on it)except(1097 Ver 451S) in recorder drive
Clicked on "restore"
Clicked on "yes"
Drive closed, unit powered off on its own for a few seconds, powered back on and indicated "loading" After a short while "failed " "invalid disc" appeared.
I re downloaded the file and burned it to a new CD using Roxio burner.
Finalized the disc and tried again.....same results. Any ideas?

Does the machine presently work and have firmware, 086 as before. [It Should] by your discription
It is not necessary to install 097. --- 098b will have all the latest upgrades
I an not a fan of Roxio and only use Nero for some uses, however many have used them both with good results. I have always used a burner called cheetah that is free with no restrictions for 15 days
As uou said a new disk was used with only the ONE firmware file and finalized
Use Only the 098b firmware.
You could Try this ---[I use it often but it?s up to the user]
Turn the unit off with the remote
Press and Hold the Stop Button on the ilo unit iself. While holding the stop button, Press the Power on button on the Remote. Keep holding the Stop button on the unit.
The tray should open and in a short time the Display will Say [Put Cd In]
You can release the stop button
Put the -cd in the tray and Press the open/close button ON THE UNIT [not the remote]
The tray should close and in a short time the display should indicate F up and a number
When finished the tray should open , and the display say [done] remove the disk and turn the unit off with the remote. Wait a few seconds and turn it back on.
In Setup the SN # should indicate that 098 is installed ---[that would be the third set of 4 from the left]
I had indicated that I would install 098b and would.
As indicated a firmware upgrade can fail, like a power failure or any fault. Such a failure can lead to real problems and may lead to a dead unit

Hi gordonhi, one thing that would make a firemware CD invalid is renaming the file before burning it, I've done that the first time I hacked a recorder, I've also hacked over 12 Liteon/Ilo units with this tool, never had a problem other than the first time when I renamed the file and one badly burnt disc.
I read your step-by-step, the only difference with my steps is that I do the "restore" and I have the source on "no disc" then I open and load the tray. Not sure if any of this makes any difference, it's the one that works for me.
Good luck

Hello all....again. I know that when this finially works it's going to be because of some really simple thing.
First off.....the unit is still working on 86 as if nothing has happened.
LCSHG.....things worked just as you wrote up to where I should have seen F and some numbers.....got "error" message.
CRAZCANUK.........tried what you did.....got "failed" message.
I re downloaded the 98 hacked file..both the ISO and the NERO file.
Burned them to new CDs using Roxio and another set with Nero. Same results with same messages. LCSHG...found the Cheeta site and will download the file and try that. Oh....I have been working with a computer running Vista.......I have tried the same things on my Sony running XL no luck. And yet old 86 keeps ticking along as if nothing has happened. Thanks fellas for your time and ideas Gordon

Your Quotes
LCSHG.....things worked just as you wrote up to where I should have seen F and some numbers.....got "error" message.

----------------------------------------------------------
I believe the problem is in downloading the iso and Nero image files. Unless you are familiar with them [Don?t]
Download the Hacked file, [NEW 1098 Rev B MV/LP Hacked} this file should have an extension .ES5
Burn this file [ONLY] to a cd disk , It should be WMEA1098.ES5
Following the procedure I gave, or others, the disk should take.
Again ; There is a risk and Make Sure that Nothing interrupts the process as a power failure etc.

I was downloading the iso and nero thinking those were the files. Did like you wrote both on the vista and xp computers.....still get error message and no "F up and a number". Have had no interruptions, and have used new discs every time. On the xp used nero to burn and to check data after burning, it said ok. Have u ever run into something like this?

I use Windows 98se [for my purpose]. Many have used XP with OK results
As said I have used the burner cheetah and have done many firmware changes.
I have never run into problems as you said.
When you checked the burned disk in file manager did the disk show the file?
WMEA1098.ES5
I had an older version of the 04 firmware on disk and it loaded in a 04 I had, without problems.
This was using the method I gave
Using NERO 6.5
I burned the file WMEA1098.ES5 from a download at http://www.ncc2315.com/ilo/r04.htm
I used this disk and file in the same 04, using the same procedure. The unit accepted the disk and upgraded the 04 to firmware 098b without problems.
If the 04 is operating OK as you indicated. I can only feel that something has been done wrong in the file selection, burning, loading or all

Hi again, a question and more tips, pulling at straws now but hey never know. Have you been experiencing some problems with the drive like disc recognition prior to trying to update the firmware? The thinking is that if so, the lens might be dirty and maybe trying to clean it before updating the firmware might help.
Also my now old batch of cds' are x32, so I have to tell the application to burn no higher than x32. I have different brands of recorders (Philips, Go Video, Centrios, Liteon and ILO) and some of them asked to burn firmware disc at a lower speed and they all worked when I burnt them at x32 and finalized the discs.

Thanks for your messages and for hanging in there with me.
Iam going to try to download the Cheeta burner and use it....I'm stuck with XP.
I've been downloading the ES5 file from the web site you gave and just did it again.
Have not had any problems with disc recognition bu will clean lens anyway. The CDs have been burning at 40x on 52x TDK . I am going to try to use 52x Memorex and see if I can burn at slower speed if the 40x doesn't work. In the past I have used the DVD TDKs (Costco) and have had playback problems on other peoples machines after finalizing, but never had problems with the CDs. I'll let uknow what happens. Thanks again. Gordon
