Ok here is the problem.

I have burned dozens of DVD's from AVI. I use WINAVI and a program called Final Burn to do the actual burning. I do not use WINAVI to burn my DVD's as it does not do a consistant job and makes coasters here and there. Final Burn never gives me this problem.

I downloaded 2 movies last week and when I converted them to DVD from teh AVI format, the DVD's play in my computer but not in my Sony syandalone player.

To double check that everything is OK I burned a movie from a couple of weeks ago and it works just fine in all players. So it is not the player as it palys in both my Sony players.

After I convinced myself it is not he equipment I made a new DVD from the origianl AVI from a couple of weeks ago and it also worked fine whne I converted it to DVD nad it plays in both of my players.

So that pretty much gets the equipment malfunction out of the way. I have 10 movies in AVI format from several weeks ago and they all burn just fine.

I am using the same package of media that I originally used so it is not the media. I nnow have 2 copies of all of the older AVI I downloaded. They all work.

So I downloaded a couple of new AVI and when I convert them using the same procedure as I always do, the new files are not playable in my standalone players, but play in my computer. The AVI's play fine in the computer also. The standalone player reports that it is a non-playable disc and does not load it.

I am ruling out MS updates as I can still convert the older AVI's and I can still burn them and play them successfully.

So as Sherlock Holmes put it "Rule out all of the possible facts and what ever left no matter how improbable, that has to be the answer". Can it be that some of the new AVI's we get torrents have an encryption scheme???

If you have had this problem, please let me know what you did to overcome the it, but I assure you it is not my equipment or else I would not be able to burn the 3 week old movies that I got from a different source.

I have 3 or 4 AVI's that are giving me problems and I am wondering if this is a trend for things to come from the MPAA.

what brand of DVDs are you using? and whats your burn speed?

using Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim burning at 8x max or below will yield the best results. also if your using the DVD plus R format try booking to DVD-ROM or use the DVD dash R format.

try using dvd flick and burning with imgburn and see how that combo works out

sounds like a pal/ntsc issue they play in pc ok...

check your settings in winavi arnt on auto?

your avi's may be pal type so burn a s pal, or ntsc type and burn as ntsc...

but to be honest i would use TFM first then go with convertxtodvd or dvd flick, winavi isnt for me...

to burn imgburn all the way!

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Agree with both gents here, Dvd Flick and ImgBurn is probably your best bet. I've never liked winavi and i tried final burn and wasn't real pleased with it either. ImgBurn is the best burn engine out there, and it's freeware.

Well I doubt that the DVD's are the problem as I can burn the older stuff and it works well. As far as final burn, never made a coaster yet. THe settings on WinAVI , well I will check that.

So I guess none of you have an answer and are as stumped as I am on this. I am an engineer and have performed tests to make sure the hardware and software are working and they appear to be since I can still encode my older AVI's, which were also torrent files.

Anyone else have any suggestions????

My suggestion is to try DVD Flick or ConvertXtoDVD as already suggested. WinAVI isn't widely used here for a reason, the inconsistency which you pointed out yourself is just one reason. Do yourself a favor and try the other programs (DVD Flick is free, ConvertXtoDVD has a trial period which leaves a watermark until a license is purchased) and see if you have any joy. If not then we will move on from there.

Not likely.

Seems you were given a lot of suggestions. It's time for you to provide some more details and answers. Where do you live? Are you PAL or NTSC (as was asked)? Do you have WinAVI set to your TV format or do you have it on Auto (as was asked). You should have checked your settings before this post and your request for more suggestions.

Use GSpot on an AVI that worked and one that didn't and note the differences. Do the same with a VOB from one that works and one that didn't and note the differences (as was suggested).

The folks on this forum are very patient, much more so than me. They aren't 'stumped' they are doing the best they can with the meager info you are providing them with.

Found the problem. Is was in the auto setting of NTSC and PAL. Checked it like you saiud and now it works like it used too. I got a recent update and it must have reset when it was updated. As I said before I have never made a coaster DVD with Final burn and WINAVI usually does everything I asked of it. I have tried several DVD format tools and WINAVI seems to run the fastest on my machine. As for final burn, I tried several of those too and it seems to work well with me Plextor DVD writer.

Thanks all
