I've been looking to buy or build a new PC recently, particularly for gaming. I am looking for some system that can run something like Oblivion at the highest settings and still get very smooth framerates.

My friend introduced me to CyberpowerPC.com, and I just wanted to check with the experts here and see if I can get some feedback or testimonials before I go out and spend my dollars. It seems like most of their stuff is very well-priced, almost too good to be true. They have a quad-core system on there starting at 865 bucks...I've never seen that before.

Since I don't know crap about building, and frankly I'm kind of intimidated to try it, this seems like a safer alternative.

Cyberpower seem to make decent machines, but I've no personal experience of them, I don't live in a country where they're sold.
They have a deal with NZXT for cases, which is good as they're solid cases, suggests that the rest of the parts will be decent quality too. Just beware there's no such thing as a free lunch, especially with prebuilt PCs. If a PC is cheap, there's a reason why. The 800 dollar quad core PC will probably have a crap graphics card like an 8500GT.

They are like ibuypower which have horrible support and computer parts, some parts are even used before. I suggest you buy it from newegg but i don't think you will like it. I recommend this one at costco.com

The prebuilt Ibuypower units on newegg always seemed to have relatively decent parts in them. The ones you can spec yourself have a mediocre selection of parts in some areas I agree, but they seem to be relatvely well designed. After-sales support I can't comment on since I don't live in the US!
P.S.: I may be biased in favour of them as they use my favourite case in the world, the one in that Costco offer in fact!
Above all there's no substitute for building your own PC though.
burp: Avoid that one from costco though, looks aside it uses the older 8800GTS which is much slower than the new version. Go with one with an 8800GT, HD3870 or the new G92 8800GTS (512MB).
Oh yeah, and it has a crap motherboard. I had one, they stink.

I bought my system 8/16/2007 from these jerk-off's -stacker 830 [really 831 they do a switch on you the 831 has less options and is made only for cyberpower by coolermaster I called them]-intel E 6850 -ASUS striker extreme -tagen 1100Watt-2gbCorsair ram-8800gts320MB superclocked-raptor150GB/WD500GB-22inch monitor- anyway thats most of what makes it go or not go in my case- issue is with striker extreme-the 6th motherboard is on it's way now [counting last one that arrived as a used&damaged thermal paste all over cpu housing peice of junk] anyway my question and or comment is- Does anyone else have issues with striker extreme????I haven't even played a game yet, I mostly surf the net[torrent site's] and convert and burn DVD's first 2 cmos went out 3rd just blue screened all the time as did 4th one now the 5th is having I/O error [DVD rom and burner cause of windows explorer lock-up and cause windows explorer to restart after you eject disk]!!!!!! Does or has anyone else had any of these troubles??? Does anyone else know how to fix the un releiablity of the striker extreme?? I paid good money for this system$2587.00 and at the time the striker extreme was the best these jerk's had now I'm at end of warranty and they still don't have any answer's except to send new board and that will end soon so I'm hoping my peer's might know of a trick or some thing to keep this thing running till I can afford new board that"s not a striker or ASUS for that matter they cyberpower that is, know it has issue and won't spend extra $20.00 to up grade to striker II it's supose to have issue's solved [but they did offer to send a board that was based on 680i chipset but could not give me part# or value but it was about $100.00 cheaper that striker] now I know I'm not trying to rip them off but wouldn't it be cheaper to send one at+20 than 5 at+250 !!!! I have talked to the Better Business Bureau and one local law office and they both feel I have a case under the long arm law of Illinois ! I also have contacted two other law firm's that specialize in the "lemon law" and both feel that I do have a case and are now reveiwing the rest of the paper work I sent them ! I really don't want to sue these jerk's but with warranty running out and them exspecting diffrent result's from same piece of crap motherboard I feel I have no other recourse I have the e-mail of the president REMOVED BY ME HASKINS69"and tech and reveiw manger"REMOVED BY ME HASKINS69 and the guy that at least does get back to you REMOVED BY ME HASKINS69 not sure of his dept. but I carpet bombed them with e-mails and while I did get a responce I didn't get any answers other than that they would send new motherboard [they will throw parts at the trouble even if they know that it to will fail ] but they won't look for answer to failuer or offer a better board in same price range I bought the striker extreme because it was suppose to be best I feel at this point they are just waiting for warraty to run out then they will be done with issue so I'll probaly be suing them $2587.00 might not be much to them but to me it's a years rent or a car !!! and I wouldn't let car lot or land lord screw me and I'm not letting them !!!! so I now sit and wait for 5th motherboard if it stay's true to past it will crap out about the time warranty crapp's out and as stated by other's they do have you do your own work in my case it's not been bad I'm a ex-aviation eletronics tech and ex-tv repair man and 20 year electriction and it's do your own or pay to ship it back to them at about $110.00 each time [x5 in my case which = $550.00] so buyer beware cyberpower is not you friend they just want your money O -just to be fair it does run well when it run's!!!!!!

Also I gave e-mails and I will tell you that while I did strir them up a bit and I did get contacted by steve du and john yu I wouldn't recommend it as your first course of action because all I did was piss them off and they sent used junk Motherboard all covered in thermal paste and then after that they just told me that they were refering me to a specialist who turned out to be same tech that I first talked to about the matter "he was no specialist he's the one that couldn't give me part# on board they wanted me to take!!!!!don't get me wrong he was nice polite and tried to help[screw me] but his hands were tried by his superiores [<spelling] and I think[I don't know for sure just kinda how I feel about the way our talk went] that his butt was on the line cause he was the one who told me and I quote again "the striker extreme has issues but ASUS has worked them all out in the striker II" end quote. so buyer beware!!!! all is not flowers and sweat smell's there's a skunk in that wood pile !!!!!
so get e-mail's while you can I got them from Better Business Bureua and I'm kinda betting they will pull my post when they find them or are made aware of them[there are butt kissers everywhere] Peace and don't foget you don't have to take crap from anybody look around find out your right's and push for them they can only get away with this crap if you let them and if you let them then they'll do it again "stand up for your self!!!! if we all do that then the crap will end"
and I forgot they also said to me and I find this kinda stupid on their part and I quote " you do know we build gaming computers" end quote !!!! now I don't know about you folks but to me GAMING COMUTER means first it's a computer that does all the thing's you want from a basic computer but that the word gaming just means above and beyond computing it can handle the extreme's and rigors of playing games !!!!!!!!!NOT I play games so I'm less reliable I bought the best they had at the time except for cpu &video card[couldn't afford $1000.00 more for Quad core or $500.00 more for 8800gtx ] but 3gh was the fastest cpu speed at the time and about the video card it turn's in frame rates and core clock close to 8800gtx at 1/3 the price !!!!!it's the motherboard the thing you build your system around thats junk in my case I'm tiried of changing M/B I want them to find out why it's going out and to tell me how to fix it I've got Oblivion, crysis ,cod4,bioshock ,assassins creed and am afraid to start any yet out of fear that system will crash part way through [we all know how that suck's!!!! ]

For those of you that don't know In Illinois at least [and many other states have the same law ] the lawgers that sue under the "lemon law" they do not charge you they sue then get their fees from cyberpower so if your the revenge type you get them twice 1you get your money!!!! 2 they pay for your lawger!!!! its a win win for the consumer just google "lemon law" and don't be put off that it seems to be centered around auto's the law aplies to any consumer product and as I said all cost end up being cyberpowers so make sure you have all corrispondence [e-mails invoices ect...] ready since law firm will want to look over this stuff to make sure they have a case before they go forward. in my case they feel they do but I'm giving the jerk's this last chance to resolve the issue before I go forward since It's still under warranty the law firms still beleive they will have a case even if it craps out after warrany passes in my case because of history to this point and time [It hasn't worked for over 90 day's since I got it!!!] if you want or should I say you should check out my other post on this forum to see if your case is some what like mine or if your as pissed as I was at their bullsh*t just contact a lawger they'll tell you if you have a case and the 3 I talked to have all sued and won against a computer company before so it's not like it will be a first of It's kind case I forgot but will ask next time I contact them if the cases were against cyberpower either way at this point I care very little about cyberpower I'm like them I'm out to make sure I don't get screwed and mybe help a few other's not get screwed along the way !!!!!!Peace and later!!!! this was originaly posted on cyberpower forum and I copy and pasted here as I will any where I can find that will have me!!!! and to be fair I promise to follow up with new post with me eating crow if they make good this time anybody willing to take bet's they don't!!!! they done screwed the wrong hombry I'm unemployed and disabled and have nothing better to do but let others know how they are and warn them off -BEWARE NOT ALL IS TRUE IN AD'S AND NOT ALL THAT SHOULD WORK DOES EXSPECIALY WHEN IT COMES TO CYBERPOWER 6/23 THEY CALLED THIS MORNING AND OFFERED ME THE STRIKER II FORMULA AT THEIR COST ALL THEY ASK WAS THAT I REMOVE E-MAIL ADDRES I POSTED ON THEIR SITE AND WANTED TO KNOW WHERE I GOT THEM ,BOY THERE WAS A LONG SILENCE ON THE PHONE WHEN I SAID BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU BUT O-WELL ALL IN ALL I GOT THERE ATTENTION AND THEY HAVE RESOLVED ISSUE TO ALL INVOLVED'S SATISFACTION AT LEAST AS LONG AS THIS BOARD WORK'S LONGER THAN A MONTH AT A TIME, BUT THAT'S A ISSUE FOR THE FUTURE MAYBE HOPEFULLY NOT THOUGH...................PEACE...........LATER................

1. The Stacker 831 is made for various markets, not just Cyberpower, but is indeed a cut down version of the real thing.
2. G80 graphics cards like yours and 150GB Raptors have a fundamental incompatibility issue - Cyberpower should really know this
3. The original Striker Extreme, whilst not as bad as the striker II does have severe issues. Upgrading to that board will only make things worse.
4. Good luck with the lawsuit
5. Next time you post something that long, at least try and get the spelling and grammar half-right if you want to be taken seriously.

Ok I now have a cup of coffie in me.

While I did rant a bit.....Ok alot!! the point is I spent $2587.00 on a system that has been broke as much as it has worked in past 10 months. and they have done nothing but throw the same obviuoly<spelling english was never my stong point> defective part at it istead of offering a different one{at or at least one close to same price and options instead of offering something we know it work's but we don't know what model it is deal to me] at 5x cost to replace they would of saved money ! I don't really want to spend my time typing about them{remember english was not my strong point and I'm a 2 fingered typer so it's just a pain] but since thank's to them or their part's that's all my system will do now and Instead of the shiney ad's In computer mag's and their web site I thought people should hear at least one horror story about dealing with them. Their site will not let you choose wrong CPU for motherboard or video card for that fact it should do it for all compatiblity issues as your selection change so should your options , but it let's you go on the rest so in a way I SHOULD TAKE THE BLAME because I built it ,and me being new to building ,didn't know any better,I figured that if they offered it with the package it that it was compatible, with all in it. And that's what I've been telling them since about 3rd Motherboard that there is compatiblity issues. even a moron like me can see that and so all know I now have ASUS tech support #thaks to peer on another site and will try working with them on this re-build instead of cyberpower but all in all I'm just pissed about whole deal and was mainly venting some frustation<spelling again about the whole thing, and if I made anyone mad sorryexcept cyberpower that was not my intention, Iwas was just trying to inform and blow off steam at the same time and while legal recourse may be an option It's not one I want to take unless I Have no other option as I have said" I DON"T WANT THEIR MONEY I JUST WANT WHAT I PAID FOR, A STABLE WORKING SYSTEM" thank for putting up with me and as far as the grammer and spelling go as I said english was not my strong point I was a math and science guy [I was electronic tech and am a electriction so I'm not dumb by far!!!],and if some one is so narrow minded as to be grading my writing instead of getting the point behind it well I don't know!!! My point was to inform and possibly give some one a few laugh's along to way!!! And maybe ...just maybe if I was lucky find someone that is able to help me sort this mess out!! So I can have what I bought [or thought I bought] a stable working system ........Later

OH and I forgot as stated I did call coolermaster they are the one's who gave me info on the case so I can't be blamed there And could you please tell me a little more about KNOWN ISSUES with striker extreme[it might come in handy not in law suit. As I said it's a last resort, but the info might help when I replace M/B] and about incompatibility between raptor and 8800gts, because that's a new one on me and might be agrivatting[spelling] the issue with Motherboard but as single unit's I've had no trouble with either of them that I can tell and might explain why cyberpower sent 2 raptor's w/motherboard's so far[ and I thought they were just being safe bless their heart's]Other than that from what I can tell. They seem to work perfect..............thank you and later!!!!!

LIKE THE PLAIN STRIKER AND IF IT WORK'S I NOW HAVE PCI X 16 2.0 WITH THE ABLITY TO RUN 3 VIDEO CARDS [WHICH I CAN'T AFFORD] BUT I HAVE THE OPTION ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS GOOD FOR THEM THEY SEEM TO HAVE RESOLVED THE ISSUES AND ALL INVOLVED ARE HAPPY I'LL LET YOU KNOW HOW IT GOES NEXT WEEK WHEN IT ARRIVES......................PEACE...........LATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they sent the new board , but it only ran 2 day's I'm pissed to say the least . so they had me send them the system so they could fix it. the good folk's at ASUS told me to move ram around untill it posted then flash bios with the newest one 1305 I beleive. but since it's still under warranty 2 months to go I sent it in. all in all I'd have to say that cyberpower has done me right [even if I had to push the issue some what ] it's ASUS that has the troubles ,I mean look at it this way I had 5 striker extremes and 1 striker II formula and they all crapped out under normal use after anywhere from 2 day's to 2 months now thats just shitty craftsmanship , because I find it hard to beleive I got the only junk ones they built

I can't make this much more plain, but the reason why they didn't work is because they're terrible motherboards. The Asus strikers are bad news for anyone.

so what would you call a good motherboard for the system I have, that has all the features that the ASUS boards have ? since my warranty is over in 2 months and that seems to be the life span of a ASUS. so I might be in the market for one that works and is cutting edge, so it will be upgradeable in the future??

Not all Asus boards are bad, but a lot of them are. I've certainly had so many bad ones I'm not buying them again. Personally I'd go with a Gigabyte X48-DS4, reliable fully featured boards, they're proving quite popular now.

thank's I'll look into that board since with my luck this striker II formula will crap out like the rest of the ASUS shit has, but I have no option now but to let cyberpower try to fix it. ASUS tech said it needed the BIOS updated to 1305 [it came with 1001 BIOS ]and that he said would fix it, he said to move ram from slot to slot till it posted!! I tried that for a day and a half with no luck so when I called cyberpower on monday 6/30 they said they would pay shipping both way's and solve the issue. I just know I paid good money for a system that's been down more than it's been up,and while I enjoy working on computers I would like it to be other peoples computers, and that mine was working so, I could use it to look up the harder problems I encounter. I'm just tired of all the shit. you figure you get what you pay for , meaning to me you spend more you get a better product. well that doesn't seem to be true with ASUS, and if by some act of GOD [at this point I feel that's what it would take ] cyberpower get's it runnig and reliable I'm going to count my blessings

Unfortunately it's one of Asus' problems, they do make absolute lemon models from time to time. Not all Asus boards are bad, but a lot of them, including the Strikers are.

Well it seem's that I should of done more research before I bought this train wreck of a board and as I look around I see the striker II formula they up graded me to is no prize it self .so.....that being said ,and since you seem to show some knowledge of this area could you point me to a site that can help tech support wise [forum, tech site's. ect....]that I could use for help keeping this running after my 2 months warranty with cyberpower runs out? because even though I have a 3 year warranty with ASUS. from what I've read they are of little to no help when it comes to support. and since I'm unemployed [possibly disabled from car wreck ] and I blew my whole load on this system, I have the need to keep it going as long as possible,as cheap as possible, since I have no way of knowing when or if I'll get a job ! so I'll have to make this work some how . hell even if I find work tomorrow I'm so far in debtI'd need 1 years pay just to get caught up. but enough of the sob story i'm just hoping for help from my peers [alone we're weak but together we can change the world] just a little something I've learned [the hard way ] in my 46 years. but now that you know a little more about my position [you see now why I was such a angry old man on my first few post about cyberpower ] and I looked at that gigabyte board, if I was to come into some money I would prefer a board w/3 pci x 16 slots 1 for tv tuner and 2 for video cards I my humble opinion 3 video cards is a waste when you consider you only get 10-15% more of a gain for your exrta $500.00-$700.00 I just think the extra slot would be better used to turn you system into a all around entertanment center, but I ramble on I could really use help on where to look for help with this board since I'm stuck with it!!!

I don't recommend SLI boards as a rule, because it's nvidia chipsets (which are mandatory to run SLI) that cause most of the issues. Instead, go with an Intel chipset board that offers multiple PCIe slots. That does mean you have to use ATI graphics cards instead to use multiple graphics though. Since you only have one card for now that's not a problem anyway right?

thats what I've been hearing is intel chipset and ati video cards, but do they offer a board that has 3pci x 16 slots? since at this point I'm dreaming I might as well dream big! because it will be a while before I can afford a good motherboard , it will be much longer before I can afford a motherboard and video cards but I would still want a tv tuner in the mix , also any word on a tech site or forum that I can use for tech support on this crappy but high priced board I'm stuck with?

If it'll be a long while, don't ask now, ask then, the technology changes too much. What I recommend you now will be very unlikely to be top dog when you come to buy a motherboard.

very true!!!! but that said could you still point me to sites to help in keeping the system I have now running ? I mean other than this site , do you know of any that have knowledgable people that will be willing help me keep my system running ? I've been to ASUS site [tech support and forum ]and while the tech's seemed more willing to help more than I'm lead to beleave by others post , they are slow to answer and I'm not much for waiting day's for answers!!And the forum of ASUS and cyberpower are full of well meaning, but unknowledgable people looking for answers to!! and just as a example when I went to ASUS forum for the "CPU INIT" error, I got answers ranging from "put the battery in backwards to unplug everything and do a rain dance and then plug it all back in in a certain order and then if it post flash the BOIS. personaly I found the backwards battery and rain dance funny, but of no help. and while the unplugging and replugging may work [for some it did and others it didn't work] so I'm assuming that something in the process is the right thing to do , but that they are not really sure either what step it was so they list all they did [rain dance included ] that worked for them!!!! and I'm really looking for a site that has smart enough people to tell me what the error codes mean, and how to resolve the issues that they point to. I've learned enough to know 1]that NVIDIA chipsets and drivers are a big part of the trouble but that what I have and have to work with 2] vista still has issues but that's what I have and like xp in time [hopefully ] microsoft will fix the issues , sp1 did help some . 3]that ram brand, type, speed, ect... can cause alot of trouble but that a BIOS flash in time [ when ASUS figures out how will fix that] and I really hope that that is what cyberpower is doing to get my system back up and running so I don't have to do it since I've read horror storys about it from some and how easy it was for others , and well I've never done it and I really don't want to learn the do's and don'ts of that on my main system. well the be honest I'm looking for a group of others more knowledgable than me that I can learn from!!! So if you know of such a group of people, throw a brother a bone and point me in the right direction!!!! thank you for your time to this point TONY

The official PC building thread. There are many people like myself that post there regularly, they may be better suited to helping you out. Having had scarcely better luck with Asus than you have, I haven't bought anything contemporary from them, but others certainly have. Be advised though, everyone's first response is likely to be 'get a better motherboard' - nobody here likes the Striker series very much, and it's situations like yours that are the reason why... Some of us had a bit of an argument in that thread recently, it would be good to have something we can work together trying to fix to help 'heal the wounds' so to speak.

Thank's again ! I'll look there in the future.I tracked my system w/fedx and it arrived at cyberpower at 10:41AM today [Cali. time ] and since I've been such a pain in their ass and have E- Mail address for president[ John YU ], head of tech[Danny Lee ]and tech manager [steve Du] I E-Mail Danny Lee today [since he now personaly deals with me if he's at work or I get told he'll call when he gets in next day . and he does call]and asked him to send a note or E- Mail telling me what they did to get my rig running so I can post answer to this issue around , and I also asked point blank where does he look for answers, and if that doesn't work where does he look then! [knowledge is power] I let him know while his techs are polite and try to help they just don't have the answers[their main answer is to change the motherboard or pop out the battery ] and that I was looking for a source of knowledge so I didn't bother his techs or him I'm still waiting for a answer on that, but I beleive them being a good sized company that that is their standard fix ,to just change the part instead of trouble shooting the issue. since thats a quick simple way to solve the issue for them..but well see what he say's! I have faith he'll get back to me , but I also have faith in the fact that he won't contact me till he fixes my rig, and then I'll probely[my spelling sucks] get double talk on the answers I asked for

All NVIDIA 8400M / 8600M chips faulty?
by Nilay Patel, posted Jul 10th 2008 at 3:07PM

NVIDIA's stock took a pretty big hit last week when it announced that "significant quantities" of "previous-generation" GPUs and mobile and communications processors were defective and that it would take a $250M charge against earnings to repair and replace the affected chips, but the company didn't say which chips specifically were faulty, nor how many. That might be because the problem is much worse than it even sounds -- according to a report in The Inquirer, every single G84 and G86 GPU in the 8400M and 8600M series of cards is affected. Apparently both chips share an ASIC, and the core design suffers from the same heat-related issues. That certainly implicates a "significant quantity" of chips, all right, but this is just a rumor for now -- one that's probably best handled by NVIDIA stepping up and letting its customers know exactly how big the problem is.

[Thanks, Rich]
