Hey there.
First I would suggest to check the start up utility program which can show you the kinds of softwares are starting up. Do this on safe mode:start-run-msconfig-enter-start up tab(last tab).
Here check if there is any suspicious names or some that you are not sure about. You can ask me for some of them if you want.
Second i don't know which antivirus and antispyware u used, but be sure to use search and destroy and ad-aware. Which one did u use to scan your computer by the way?
And last say what kind of OS u use.
And something else. While in safe mode, check the add/remove programs program to seeany suspicious softwares.

It sure sounds like something is consuming a lot of resources at startup for it to freeze like that.

I'd suggest running an anti-virus program in Safe Mode if possible, if not, let your PC boot up in normal mode no matter how log it takes and then run an antivirus scan.

What AV are you using? If the answer is Norton then get rid of that useless pile of cr@p and get something better.
