I just bought Nero 8 Ultra and Blu-ray & HD DVD Plug-in for it. But still I found I can't play any commercial Blu-ray or HD DVD movies with it. I can play Blu-ray video disk I made myself no problem.

Here is my setup:

1. Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit;
2. LG GGW-H20L Blu-ray burner with HD DVD reader and firmware YL02;
3. VisionTek ATI radeon HD3870 video card with HDCP;
4. LG L226WTQ monitor with HDCP;
5. A Pioneer Plasma TV with HDMI/HDCP.

Anybody else here have the same problem or can tell me what went wrong? Nero support is useless. They asked bunch of questions and collected lots of data from my computer but still can't give me an answer after more than a week.

Hi,
It seems to be a problem with all the programs with blu ray support at the moment. I tried Cyberlink Power DVD with 3.10 to Yuma Blu Ray. It loads up to the menu and from there you cant do anything cos you cant use a mouse or keyboard to select anything.
After a day or 2 getting more and more frustrated, I found Nero which seems just as bad at the moment. Looks like all these programs were rushed out before they were actually finished.
Ive eventually found a way around it though so you can actually watch a film off blu ray;
Rip the disk to your HDD (use anydvd hd, and run the main .m2ts through the freewaer tool TSremux, keeping the audio track(s) you want. Choose Blu-ray output, and PDVD will play the resulting stream fine.
You dont get any fancy menus or anything but at least for now you can watch the film.
Ive heard its only an issue with certain discs though, Ive only got 3.10 to yuma, some are meant to work fine i think.

When I was looking for a software player, PowerDVD Ultra doesn't support my video card and that's why I chose Nero. I just checked PowerDVD again and found they support ATI now. Interesting. But according to you, it doesn't work either. Could you list your setup here so we know for sure what will not work?

The HD DVD playback is the most important part for me since my PS3 can play Blu-ray. The fact I can use Nero to play my own Blu-ray video disk and you can rip a commercial movie and play it from your HD convinced me it's the HDCP/encryption on those Blu-ray movies that cause the problem. So we should blame movie companies, not the software companies for this. Right?

Good luck!

amd athlon 64x2 dual core 5000+ 2.6
2 gig ram
Nvidia GeForce8600 GT
Hyundai w240d Pro HD monitor

everythings hdcp.
Yeah, i think it is the copy protection thats mainly messing things up. Ive spent the last few days pulling my hair out trying to sort it but it seems that the software just isnt developed enough yet. Both nero and pdvd both seem to not work in different ways!
Ive got it now so i can stream any file from the blu ray in nero, using the method above, whilst pdvd will stream all the files except the main movei file.
PDVD is the only one that will read from the actual blu ray though, and bring up the main menu (cant get past there though).
WIND DVD HD looks like a good bet but i dont know if i can face more torment!

I actually have WinDVD 8 Platinum from InterVideo before I read the tiny tiny print on it says "WinDVD 8 Platinum supports the playback of many high-definition video formats (H.264, VC1, HD MPEG-2, and WMV-HD etc?) but it does not support the playback of HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc)". It sounds like saying "this DVD player can play whatever you pass through it but it just can't play DVD". :-)

I think it's interesting to point out what we found so far:

1. Intel (Q6600) + ATI doesn't work (my setup);
2. AMD (5000) + Nvidia doesn't work (rsellars's setup);

Other combinations need to be tested:

3. Intel + Nvidia;
4. AMD + ATI.

Anybody here has the last two combinations? I wonder what combination Nero tested their software on if any.

At least you got a reply!
After more than a week without a reply, I am also waiting for Nero to reply to my "tech support" request.
Once these people sell a product, they could care less about the owner's problems, or little distractions like providing value for money received.
I have tested their plugin with 11 Blu-ray discs - 2 have actually played - Black Hawk Down and Spiderman 3.
Tupically Nero SHowtime will declare that a disc is present, & show an audio rate of 0 and a black screen.
Not bad for $29.95 Eh!
I hope their oncologists provide them with similar service.

Thanks for the information. And now the only hope is AMD + ATI. Since they are the same company now, it may make sense.

About Nero tech support, since Nero is a German company (I believe), is it normal for them? I am just wondering...

Let's see.....
Germans are known for their attention to details and their need for order.
Does their behavior on this issue seem remotely "German" in this contect?
They are, however, typically German in their "our way or the highway" attitude.

I have been dealing with them since version 5 and this typical Nero, not German, behavior. They still make, to my mind, the best CD/DVD burning suite on the market. But their tech "support" is robotic and un-sympathetic, and it always has been.
They are not being German, they're just being assholes.

PowerDVD will only display HD content on one screen, the primary display. You'll need to make the HDTV the primary display.

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

No, we are still talking about Nero 8 here. If this thing drags too long, I may just buy PowerDVD and sell this Nero on eBay! :-)

Now sundiego may want to ask you about some details. His Intel Q6600 plus Nvidia 8800GTX 768MB didn't work. I assume 8800GTX is a newer card. What monitor do you have? Is it HDCP?

Thanks for the input.

Since you are the only one here reported successful Blu-ray play and you use Nvidia 7950 GX2, which has 2 GPUs, I just upgraded mine from ATI radeon HD3870 to a HD3870 X2. And interesting enough, it works! Now I can play both Blu-ray and HD-DVD from my PC with Nero 8! I also found I have to disable one of the displays (I can't show movies on both monitor and HDTV).

So the conclusion here is simple: It's all about money! If you want to play HD movies from your PC, you have to spend enough money on your video card that matches the price of a HD player. :-)

my god that some serious graphic card power to watch a movie and expense, doesnt seem right does it? will it ever take off to full main stream?

is it worth spending a 1000 on a 10 dollar film?

maybe just rip it/convert to play on normal pc?

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

yeah good luck with blu-ray which is sill the devil in my opinion but HD DVD you can convert. i have most of my collection down to 720p for size but mainly for playback on a 360. thats why it should have won HD DVD is much more consumer friendly. But i would say that the minimum requiremnts for nero's hd playback should be updtaed, mainly the video card. process doesnt play that much role i dont think. i only have about 30-50 cpu usage when playing them.

If think it in a more positive way, this $500 card can also be used for gaming, video editing, etc.... :-)

I just found Nero 8 can't play Across Universe (Blu-ray). I haven't found any HD DVD it can't play yet. This must be the security key problem PowerDVD was talking about and I will wait for the next Nero upgrade.

But does anybody know why hardware Blu-ray or HD DVD players don't need such a "key" to work? Why only software players?
