Hi Guys,
I did a lot of searching on the forums to find an answer to my problem but I couldn't find one so, I'm hoping someone will be able to help.
I get a "logical unit communication CRC error (ultra-DMA/32)" error message when I try to read any disc in dvd decrypter, write works fine. the message pops up as soon as I change the app to read mode. I have tried many things to troubleshoot this and found a few interesting things but don't know where to go from here. When I go into safe mode I don't get the error, when I go into safe mode with network I do get the error. When I change the transfer mode of the drive to PIO mode in normal bootup mode I don't get the error (but PIO mode is slow so I'd rather fix this problem). I have a lite-on LH-20A1H with latest firmware using winxp SP2 and aspi drivers installed, asus p4c800 deluxe M/B. I only upgraded to XP recently and this is the first time I tried to read a disc, in win2000 I had no issues with this drive at all. any suggestion is appreciated

Is DVD Decrypter the only one that gives the error? Did you try DVDFab HD Decrypter instead?

have you just fitted this drive? (aslo means moved or touched cables in pc, moved wires etc...)

is it on the same ide cable as another drive?

did you set master and slave correctly? (set as master!)

did you check dma in device manager or the bios?

have you updated firmware? (no errors installing it)

is your aspi layer working correctly? could try forceASPI

Check your motherboard chipset / ide drivers are up-to-date (both!)

-------------------------------

and are you useing an 80 wire ide cable (dont use a 40) <-- if you have another 80 wire cable try it !!! could be faulty.

you may have been ok with win2000 on a 40wire xp not... if you have 2 80 wire cables swap them round and try a clicking read mode with NO disc in drive

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

thanks for the reply guys, I haven't tried reading with any other burning software but even my cyberlink powerdvd wouldn't play movies when I tried. rotary,

I haven't made changes to the setup of the drive or cables for it, I have made other changes on my pc setup hardware wise as I installed a new SATA HDD to my system which would coincide with the upgrade to winXP but should not be causing any interference to the burner because it's SATA.

master and slave settings are good because if they weren't then I'm sure my bios or windows would give me an error and not detected one of the devices on this IDE channel.

What should I check spacifically as far as DMA goes, as I mentioned this error only occurs in DMA mode I'm ok in PIO mode.

firmware is up-to-date as the first thing I tried to do was upgrade the firmware to latest.

aspichk shows everything is running ok.
aspi32.sys ver. 4.71.2
wowpost.exe ver. 4.6(1021)
winaspi.dll ver. 4.6(1021)
winaspi32.dll ver. 4.71.2
are these the most recent?

also in dvddecrypter when I try to change the I/O setting to any of the ASPI ones I get an error doesn't matter if it's read or write mode but, SPTI is the only I/O mode that's accepted which kinda makes me think it's an ASPI problem???

I 13:32:14 DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 started!

E 13:32:37 Visit http://www.dvddecrypter.com to download one.
E 13:32:37 Alternatively, try changing the 'I/O Interface' in the Settings to a different one.
W 13:32:57 I/O Interface has been changed!

I 13:32:57 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...
W 13:32:57 No devices detected!

not sure about the 40 or 80 wire IDE cables but I have no other spare IDE cables maybe I'll switch the cables that are already in the pc but they both look the same.

Since there is no problem when I boot into safe mode I'm thinking this is more of a software problem rather than hardware. there must be something that loads up in normal mode or safe mode with networking that is causing the problem, because in safe mode it works like a charm.

I'll try that forceAspi, if you have any other suggestions send them my way!

hmm this one is a puzzle indeed

i think the: E 13:32:37 Unable to initialise ASAPI! - ASAPI.DLL

has to be in the app folder/directory...

i got a stinky feeling its bios and the ide/sata not running ok together, all my 6x hd's are sata, and the bios setting in my mobo were a nightmare aswell as dual raided... needed to set in 2 / 3 places for correct running, all my ides are dvd drives...

is there a bios update for sata enabling for your mobo? or driver for bios/sata running due to any bugs? even a bios update maybe?

have a read on the website just to check as all seems ok till xp and sata loaded?

you on NTFS not fat32?

---------

is the SATA hd the only hd drive you have? and its drive letter is C:\?

got any roxio apps installed? or nero INCD or any packet writing software?

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I tried forceaspi and it doesn't look like it fixed the problem. I did notice that the channel the burner is on has a 40pin IDE though, I tried to swap this with the 80pin IDE that's on channel 1 but something didn't like it as I got a "error loading O/S" type message, after switching back the cables O/S loaded, gonna see if I can get a spare 80pin IDE from someone and test it on channel 2 which is where the burner is. my pc setup is 4hdd 1burner. 3 IDE hdd, burner IDE, 1 SATA hdd. mobo settings to have ide and sata working together is pretty simple as all I have to do is choose to use pata and sata as opposed to pata only. I have no other burning software installed atm I wanna get this figured out first. Interesting thing though, I tried to burn a dvd today and I got an error, I did it more than once with more than 1 image and nothing but coasters, I'm starting to wonder if the burner is starting to crap out. It's not that old though!!! I switched to pio only and am testing a burn with that. I'll have a read on the mobo website for any recent updates, I'll also try out an 80pin IDE cable as well, I'll report back with any changes, hopefully this discussion can help someone else in the future if I'm able to fix it.

I'm still thinking this is some kind of compatibility issue due to the whole safe mode thing I mentioned earlier

Update:
Looks like the burn was successful in PIO mode although it did take a much longer time since it was maxing out at 2.2X in that mode.

a big yes to change the 40 to an 80, most things i read say its the ide cable, that why i put in bold above... as in pio mode a 40 wire copes dma is faster and needs 80 wire

now this is a good read http://www.directron.com/patasata.html

this brought to my attention that pata enabled needs 5volts steady flow and extra load to your pc power supply (whats the watts rating for your psu?) maybe under powered (due to extra sata drive), my psu is 650watts sli by enermax a good brand that delivers true wattage power, i run 10x drives on that at same time...

did you actually take the cables right out the mobo (unplug from motherboard 2x ide) to swap 80/40 cables? or just the 4x other ends round? if not (you boot off secondary ide) and also master and slave comes into play, you may have put the master drive in center of cable which is slave! and slave as master (master = end of cable)

i would get 80 wire and we can go from there...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

so, I got my hands on an 80 wire cable yesterday but didn't have to try it out, just got home from work not too long ago and after changing the cable the problem is gone... looks like it was the 40 wire cable causing the problem which really suprises me since it was working fine in safe mode... Thanks for all your help rotary, hope this thread is gonna help someone else out in the future.
