1500, what currency?
Right now, unless your budget is huge, I'd avoid the absolute top-end cards because they don't represent value for money. Go with an 8800GT or HD3870 instead.

Well for a start, a 3870X2 isn't realistic on a 1500 dollar budget IMO, and if you're not buying it for ages, why ask now? The stuff you can buy that long away will be completely different to what you can get now.

I've fought this fight before. I've decided it's usually not worth trying to tell people how to spend their money. Just tell them which part offers better performance and move on.
With that being said, there are people that are thankful when we try to save them money. I tend to agree with sammorris. If you're not going to buy anything for a few years, then there's no point in shopping now.

Ultimately, whatever you decide to go for, the graphics king of the hill will certainly be completely different in that amount of time.

Ok dude are you SERIOUS?! Do you have ANY idea how much stuff changes in a FEW MONTHS in the PC industry, much less 2 freakin years? Trust me it's not easy keeping up and you have to upgrade your freakin PC every few months, I would know I do it. Two years is a long time, in two years that 1500 dollar PC will be worth 500.
But just to humor you I'm giving you an estimated price list from the last time a checked(few days back). Some parts are due to be released in march...
Q9450: 316
GA-X38-DS4: 200
3870 X2: 450
500GB SATA HDD: 120
DVD Burner: 35
Thermaltake Armor: 125
Corsair 650TX: 120
Memory: 40
Total: 1406 + some for shipping. Less than 1500.

Anyway he CAN build a nice system under 1500 dollars, but it's not gonna be good to build 2 years down the line.

Agreed, 1500 dollars now will buy you a decent set of parts, but in two years time, I doubt a single component will be the same, the market moves too fast.

If you build it not, then yes you can get parts to future proof. You didn't say that though, you said you were going to BUY the parts in a few years which is, no offense, a stupid thing to do.

As you not building the PC for 1.5-2 years, not that you wanted not to have to upgrade it until then.
That makes far more sense.
Oh and also, not many people buy Alienware, not in my experience!
Anyway, you would be wise to wait a short while before building a PC on that sort of budget until the Q9450 CPU comes out...

If you want a future proof system then just go with my parts list. You're going to have to wait for the CPU to come out though...

For a new PC though, wouldn't a somewhat more stable graphics card be better?
