I know the question has been asked and answered regarding successful playback of BD backups on PS3 but I remember reading something about SONY's BD player's inability to playback BD backups. I am in the market for a BD recorder/rewriter, Obiouly I have a Sony BD player, but I'm hesitant to make the investment, if it is a fact that the Sony BD player will not playback BD backups. Can someone shed some more light on this.

i would go for it
eventually these manufacturing companies like toshiba/sony/jvc/ MUST make the players readable
i saw u boght ur bd player with in the few generations (like 1st gen , 2nd gen)

remember the dvd players won't be able to play dvd-r/rw-+r/rw
in certain time and they release dvd players that can read plaers
so called "A B C D" technology
samething here

i would blindly go for the writer
if u can afford
personally i don't own bd player yet
waiting for price down and more compatability

I got lucky and found a sweet deal on ebay for the 4x BWU-200s. hard to find media here but i did find a 25g bd-re at the local futureshop. I haven't tried to do a direct backup yet but all that i have read makes this seem easy. i'm still researching .mkv conversion, i'll get started on a backup right away and post here with results.

MaddogBC. For obvious reasons, I'll be very interested to know how it goes for you. Of course your playback of the backup will be on model BDP-S500. Mine is BDP S300 which could be the difference in success or failure of the playback. Nonetheless, I wish you sucess. keep us posted. Mtouset

Still hard at it here. Knowing full well nothing is ever ez I expected a fight. I spent last night deciding on some ripping software, I installed DVDFab Platinum after some issues with anydvd hd. After several weird glitches and lock ups i decided to call it a night. The new burner had to be installed on an upstairs computer because my main box does not support SATA.

Today i realize that with a blu ray in the drive this system continually hangs and does not respond well if at all.

Installation went well and the drive shows up in windows xp just fine. I set it to region 1 and have updated cyberlink via what seemed to be firmware upgrade. Without a disc in, the system is normal. once inserted it hangs and needs to be reset. I'm going to discuss it with some local "highly interested" techs and see what we can come up with. Going to do some forum surfing for a similar problem tonight. Thanks for your interest

Mad I'm really sorry to hear of your difficulties, but I always had a lot of faith in the members of this forum. I'm sure one or member's will pick up your situation and hopefully chime in with recommendations for resolution. Keep at it! MT

Tried a few more things with no luck

Shut down everything i could including incd , disabled autoplay, and tried it using a blank BD-RE. The techs seem to think the computer doesn't have enough horsepower to even read the disc which seems very unlikely to me. i had to put the new drive in my kids computer an AMD 3000 (EDIT:Sempron) with 1.5 g ram and an Asus 8400 GS 512m. Windows Explorer stopped responding after about 10 seconds and i had to reset. I know the system is weak for playback but i really only intend to burn with it anyhow.

There are no firmware updates for this unit yet, think i may have to give the sony 1 800 # a try.<shudder>

WOW! I don't envy you your struggle. I wish I was more technically savvy. You seem to have all the right tools, (copy software, burner, BD media, & computer), to burn and play). With my limited knowledge, I don't have much to offer in the way of assistance. My only thoughts are that you may not have enough RAM, and/or storage space in the computer, or your copy software does not support BD burning. The only software remember seeing on this site that supports HD is AnyDVD HD. I don't recall seeing DFAB putting out a version that supports HD or BD for that matter. I was really hoping that one or more of our fellow members of this forum would have something of value to offer. I'm hoping to purchase a BD burner within the next 30 days(not looking to pay an outrageous price) , but hopefully, by then you'll have succeeded
