I have been getting this error message recently,
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be closed. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
and only when I´m browsing my 500GB USB drive. (browsed everywhere else, copy/cut&pasted files everywhere, jumped back and forth, browse here, browse there, no issues.)
After doing numerous scans with Kaspersky, HouseCall online scan, ewido.net onlinescan, and checking my registry with CCleaner and Registry mechanic, franticly searching google after any answer, I am worn out.
Not sure what it can be, what i have concluded is that it cant be a shell extension, turned all off, still a no-go. I have just formatted and re-installed Windows (SP-3) and this problem was not there in the beginning.
Sure, I have installed a lot of programs, as you have to when doing a fresh install, but nothing I haven´t used before, and nothing connected to my USB drive. Some help would be highly appreciated..
Thanks.
Here´s my HJT log:

Actually no.. Never resolved it, after a couple of weeks I "resolved" it, by canning Xp alltogether, not had any problems of the sort with Vista.
Believe me, after numerous hours of trobleshooting a day, I gave up, and just upgraded to Vista, a quite nice operating system if you ask me.
Peace

Probably just a bad or corrupt .dll file.
Did you ever run SFC /scannow ???
