Best compression method - to compress my video library for streaming to living room from PC

I am trying to compress my video library for streaming to my living room from my PC.

What is the best method to use? WMV, MPEG4 etc.

I am currently using WMV, and I can see occasional video imperfections. I am not totally sure it is not my wireless network though. I am using a Netgear EVA8000 to manipulete my data to my display monitor and I know it supports WMV, MPEG1,2 and 4, AVI and XVID files.

I would like to have a nice quality and still be able to hold my library in a soft format on a HD for easier use with my family (to be exact - the kids not damaging the DVDs...) I do rip and burn copies on DVD-Rs, but I am also looking at the big picture of not having disks left all over the place.

I'd use Xvid. There are lots of tools that use it, and a lot of standalone players can handle that format so if you back your Xvid up to DVD as data you can watch them that way if you need.

How do I create an XVID file? I am trying the DVDFAB Platinum right now, but do not see that in the list of mobile features at least. Will that program do them?
