Error Code 39 & DVD Drives not working with Vista x64

Posting the fix that worked for me.

DVD drives in my system all stopped working. Error messages in Device Manager indicated that drivers were not loaded properly. I saw that there were (3) drivers loaded for most of my DVD drives ((1) external USB drive, (1) IDE-based "Lite-On" drive with Lightscribe, and a few virtual DVD drives using "Virtual Drive Pro".

The culprit appears to have been the iviaspi.sys driver that was loading for each of my DVD drives. This file was apparently part of an installation of either InterVideo's WinDVD application, or a similar program called something like Video Studio 9.0 or Pinnacle Studio 9. Oh yeah, there was one other driver (GEARAspiWDM.sys) that I changed (updated) and after I did so, it showed up with a digital signature where it had not before.

Here are the actions I took to fix my problem:

1. Update the GEARAspiWDM.sys driver

From: ftp://downloads.gearsoftware.com/updates/windows/drivers/Driver_Installer_AMD64_EM64T.exe

Note: New drivers may post instead of the one above, so just search the gearsoftware.com website for the latest drivers for your OS.


2. Uninstall ALL DVD drives so that they are no longer using (or trying to use) the iviaspi.sys driver.

3. Uninstall the culprit program(s) that install the iviaspi.sys driver (in my case it was Intervideo's WinDVD application.

4. Reboot windows (I rebooted, you may only need to "Scan for hardware changes" in Device Manager).

All (5) of my DVD drives then worked!!!
