OK, if the drive is an unmountable boot volume then you may be looking at buying a new HDD.

However if its just stating that it cant load drivers a format may solve your problem.

If you want to transfer files from this drive to another you will need to have 2 internals (the second must also have an operating system) or another machine.

Make the drive that is NOT working the slave and hopefully when you boot up the computer you will be able to read the second drive an transfer files.

This will only work if your HDD is still working.

Good luck. let me know how you get on.

It doesn't matter if it is XP. You won't be using it as your boot drive. You will be using it as a slave. You have to move the jumper, on the back of the drive, to make it a slave drive.

Since your are more than likely to need another drive, anyway, I would get a new large capacity hard drive, install your Windows XP on it, in your existing computer.

I would then attach the "bad" drive as a slave, to see if XP recognizes it. If XP does, then you can get your files off of it.

Yeah, what GrandpaBW said. sorry it took so long to post. been having trouble with my internet connection.

If you do all of what GrandpaBW says an none of it works then im afraid there isn't a way of getting info off the drive, unless you have a HDD reader (Not very commen, Very expensive).

Good luck.

hey guys i bought a wd 500 gb $100 on sale .
when im trying to install the lifeguards tools i end in screen saying when installing a os , support for accesing drives larger than 137 gb may not be enabled immediately. controllers must use custom 48 bit drivers to support drives larger than 137 gbor data loss can occur.depending on ur version of windows, these drivers may not be applied until after windows is installed. how i check if my windows supports mora than 137gb , my bad drive is a 200 gb , that mean it support more gb ????
sorry about all this newbie question !!

OK, Having installed windows check to see if you drive is reading at the right size. should be about 493g or around that mark.

If this is the case you should be ok.

If not...

Get back to us, im currently learning about this myself so may have a few more ideas by then.

Good luck.

OK, on your old hard drive you wont be able to access anything that is in the "My Documents" area.

The reason you can't do this is because you are not logged in as the administrator of that drives operating system, so it does not allow you the rights to access any confidential files or folders. (So if you were to throw the drive away, no one else can plug it in an get your files with out your password)

However if you do go to throw it away make sure you format the drive just to protect yourself a bit more.

If my last post didn't make much sense here it is again but a little bit simpler.

Its not a problem with your drive, it perposly stops you from looking at those folders because the drive is set to slave so you dont have the adminastrative rights to access them.

This is done to stop anyone plugging your drive in and taking all your personal files, folders and details off.

Its more for your protection.

I don't know away around this accept for using the drive as master and logging in to windows.

You're welcome. And make two backups of those important files.

No prob, glad we could help.

Store your backups on CD/DVD rather than on an external.
Its a safer way of not losing data. (Still possible, but atleast you can't accidently delete it)

As with system restore, doing a full restore will format your drive back to default. (As if you just baught it from the shop)

With normal restore you can choose to restore your computer to an earlier point that you know it was working at. All it does is roll back drivers and settings.

No saved files or folders are removed.
Some programs may be removed. (Never removed any on my laptop, but the program states that it may)

System restore is completely reversible, just open system restore and return it back to the restore point made when you restored your computer the first time.

For more info if this don't help, open the program and it tells you everything you need to know. :)

I would cetainly recommend just the opposite, in the case of DVD's, anyway.

And, depending on how much data has to be stored, neither DVD, nor CD, is really a viable alternative.

I would however, have a dedicated hard drive, that would be stored on the shelf, or in a drawer, when not being used to backup data.
