Hi,
have problems trying to burn/save files onto dvd-r discs(verbatim) using my dvd-rw drive. at first it was asking to format disc now its hanging when trying to access it.
do these discs need to be formatted first?
is it the drive, the discs or the user approach?
let us know if you need more info.
cheers.....

@IrlMonk
Try some +R media. The drive might picky with the + or -. The only person I know that has drives like this is one of my brother-in-laws. He has trouble with -R; But none with +R.

Burn On,
Russell

Cheers Russell ;)
gonna try uninstalling the ide channel drivers as suggested by alkohol:if your DMA is OFF or PIO Mode http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038
the discs should work....nearly sure its a driver issue.
more suggestions welcome;)

Go into device manager under Dvd/CDRom drives. Locate your drive, uninstall drivers, and reboot.

If still does the same thing afterward, then you may need a firmware update for your dvd-rw drive. This free program will tell you:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._identifier.cfm

Post back the brand name, model #,and current firmware version of your dvd-rw drive.

Most likely,the firmware won't recognize the verbatim-My need Re-flashed?

Did you uninstall drivers and reboot? Sometimes dvd-rw drives can get lost, making it look like it's a cd rw drive only. It happened to me a couple times.

Here's your firmware version here-open up,scroll down till your H21N:

http://tdb.rpc1.org/#DW1650

Dell oem:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2302

On this site,it lists B109 as the latest firmware for it and A105 as an older version. Updating the firmware should be the last resort. Bad flashes can ruin a drive.

Got any other blank dvds laying around to give them a shot?

Bad batch? It can happen with any brand named media.

I had that last week on some Staple's Playo that had fake MCC-004 MID code, which is verbatim's.

Good Luck!

Hi saugmon ;)
thanks a mil for all the advice....well done ;)
my drive seems to be up and running a lot better now. although i still cannot burn wvm to dvd.
brought the dvd-r discs into work to try them out. successfully burnt data files onto the disc using roxio direct-to-disc, but i cannot burn or create a dvd from a wmv file so it can be played in a dvd player.
i also noticed how explorer would freeze on several occassions on both machines often needing re-booting while trying different processes.
at home i use roxio.
at work i use nero & roxio.
am i missing something? there are a lot of threads with very similar issues. the drive is about 2 years old, but seldom used. is it time to purchase a new one i doubt it?
i think i will try another make of disc (although verbatim have a good reputation)
any recommendations for discs brands and burning software are welcome.
again, thanks to all, for the excellent information on afterdawn ;)
more troubleshooting suggestions pleaseeeeee. ;)
i'm addicted.
Kind Regards

Nero and Roxio can clash. Each contains a packet that can take over a machine. Drag to Disc in Roxio, and INCD packet of Nero.

Nero8 i'm not sure of. I stick with the older nero6 oem discs. I don't do any transferring. For that,I use Dvd shrink and autoburn with nero. Sometimes enabling a background ripper called Anydvd on the tougher encryptions.

DL backups, Rip and burn with ImgBurn.

First off, your burner isn't that old. I still have my Benq 1620's working, and the original has over 5000+ burns. They still perform great with all the 16x media that I have used, except playo.

Your LG drive should have bitsetting capability to booktype the plus format,to dvd-rom. This helps increase the compatability of your backups.Keep that in mind in case you get No Disc errors on any players.

Some brands like my Benqs highly favor the plus format, and the dash format gives me more issues.

Verbatim: They now have 2 manufacturers of their 16x media. Cmagnetics and Prodisc. They suppose to use the same Advanced Metal AZO dye and go by Mitsubishi's quality standards, but some people see a difference between the 2. I haven't picked any up for a while.

The 8x speed Verbatim were very good,if you can find them. Taiyo Yuden are highly recommended, but fakes are out there. Gotta watch out where you purchase them at.

Sony media has been pretty decent. Some are made by taiyo yuden if you look on the wrappers for the ones made in japan. They're also easy to get locally, and on sale for less than $25 per 100 pk.

Office Depot: They have some very good media-with their brand name on it. They use Ritek and Ricoh as their manufacturers. When on sale, anywhere from 18-20 cents each!!! Avoid the other store brand name media like staple's brand, etc.

Check the media forum for the weekly sales for the best deals on blank media.Cdfreaks.com also runs a weekly sales thread in the Bargain Basement forum,so check them every sunday morning for the good sales.

These HL-DT-ST drives are really poor. New they are not working, and the life expectancy seems to be about 18 months or so.

They cost about the same as a good drive, so why not get a good one to start off with. I am very wary of the kind of optical drives fitted in "off the shelf" systems.

I checked the local pc shop (they build systems for sale, and I do a lot of work freelence for them) for these drives.. we found 5 so we tested them.. all crap with bad media compatibility.. all were HL-ST-DT or HL-DT-ST in device manager. They were bought apparently as a batch lot of unbranded OEM burners and worked out.. we did a little maths.. at £4.70 each.. less than a stack of 25 cheap dvd-r's. I would just replace the damn things.. Pioneer 111/112d drives retail at £22, where these horrid things seem to cost as retail replacement £19.99.. no choice really.

holymoly saugmon ;)
you have been a busy man burning i see....n1
1. cheers for the advice about roxio & nero clashing. will note the pc's performance.
2. do you use different software to achieve a dvd burn?
i thought nero & roxio complete the task with the press of a button! :)
3. bitsetting capability to booktype the plus format? is this automatically set? on manufacturer site?
4. 18-20 cents each...the dvd-r discs i bought where on sale....4squid for 10 (irish) robbers. might try online so, would i be slaughtered on postage?
5. discs seem to be very sensitive when there are conflicts. will dvd identifier tell me if the disc is healthy?

hi varnull ;)
there seems to be a similar problem with several different makes of drives. i think go cheap cheap.....cause its a lucky dip.
used a sony drive in work today and the same problem!or is it the discs........haha. its a funny common story.maybe im not using roxio the right way when burning.

while trying to burn with roxio i get "media is not blank. please check media"
dvd identifier reads:
DVD-R/-RW Medium Detected. Starting Identification....
**initiating lpp retrieval
LPP complete without errors
disc identification completed successfully
i'm stumped
cheers for the help;)

1)If trouble arrises, you may have to completely remove all remnants of them from pc. Nero: There's cleantool, but not sure if there's a Cleantool 8. Then download nero again, but leave out the INCD packet.

Roxio: Same thing-gotta run the roxizapper to completely remove all remnants of her. Some people have no issues between them. Just keep an eye on it.

2)You've got Ripping,Compressing, and burning. Most programs that can do this with 1 program are illegal. But,if you get several programs to do certain things, then there's a gray area.

A)Basically dvd shrink to do the ripping and compressing-and pulls off most encryption. The ones it won't,I'll enable anydvd in the background to help dvd shrink rip them. Nero recode will also compress, but won't pull off encryption.

Most original dvds are Dvd 9. Way too big to be placed onto a blank single layer Dvd-5 blank. They can be compressed down to fit onto blank dvd-5.

B) Non compressed backups= 1:1 copy:Dvd decrypter and ImgBurn can rip and burn, just won't compress. Both similar and by the same author LightningUK. ImgBurn has been updated, dvd decrypter hasn't been for a while. They may have issues with the newest encryptions. Basically rip to harddrive, fish out the MDS files, and burn away. These would be the lower budget dvd-5's-that'll fit without compression,or if backing up dvd-9's onto blank Dual layer/Double layer media. That's the way to go for DL backups!

If no encryption and no encryption, then most dvd software can rip these like nero, roxio, sonic, etc. You can even rip and burn on the fly if you have dual drives-but very risky.

Nero,Roxio,Sonic and programs like them, can't remove encryption. Dvd shrink will remove the encryption of most original dvds, but not all of them.

I'll rip with dvd shrink and nero 6 is set to autoburn-sometimes enabling anydvd in the background. 3 programs, but I only go through dvd shrink. This makes it look like a 1 program process because nero and anydvd is in the background. That combo will do 99+% of all movies. Gotta get familiar with different programs, then you'll have more options for the ever evolving encryptions that go on them.

Dvd shrink,Dvd Decrypter, and ImgBurn are all free!! Anydvd isn't.

3)Speed of the drive is here:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters?DVDn...0&Search=Search

There's user comments for most drives, just didn't see much with your model#.

Firmware controls the writing strategy. The firmware of your drive tells it how to burn your media. It may restrict how fast your can burn, and may not allow it to burn at all...It reads the MID code.
Just because the media is 16x and your writer is 16x doesn't mean it can burn everything at 16x.Take 8x speed verbatim. It'll burn 12x in my benqs, but may max burn 8x or 4x in some other drives. I could have burned +8x sony at 16x if I wanted-because the firmware allowed it.It's the manufacturers recommendation of allowing certain media to safely burn, and certain media it may not allow to burn.

Burn half the rated speed and you'll be ok. 16x media, I'll burn 8x on decent 16x media like Ricoh and Ritek.Crap stuff, then 4x. Verbatim +16x,I have to burn over 8x because issues arrise for slower burning-for me with MCC-004 verbatim. Quality media-Then you can increase your burn speed.Crap media, gotta keep it slow or playback and coaster issues will rise. Get decent media,it'll save you a lot of headaches now and later on down the road.

4)Bitsetting/Booktyping:Drives are different. Nero will booktype my 1620,but not my 1640. Q suite also sets the booktype for these benq drives. Plextor uses plextools. Lite-on needs a separate utility. LG,I'm not sure of. Nero, dvd decrypter, and or ImgBurn may be able to set the booktype. Booktyping is another alternative to the world of compatability of dvd players. You've got the plus and dash formats.Original dvds are in a dvd-rom format. By booktyping, you're altering-changing some 0's to 1's- or vice versa. So when you insert those backups into dvd players, dvd pc drives, and game consoles, they'll think they are actual dvd-rom format. It tricks picky players into playing backups. You'll see the many, many threads where people's players won't play their backups. It's a valuable asset if you pass your backups around. If only playing a few drives, you may not need it.

5) How much for each tentacle of a squid? LOL. I didn't know where you're from. You may be restricted as to what you can pick up locally or on the web. You can try posting a thread about a good deal or reputable sites to buy blank media in your area.

6)Dvd identifier will tell you basic info about blank disc.It will tell you if it has been booktyped or not.

I know qsuite can scan a blank disc and tell me if it's all right to burn. I'm not sure about NeroInfoTool or Dvdinfopro. They can scan a burned disc for PIE/PIF/and PO errors. I just burn away when I try different media.

thanks a mil for all this valuable easy to understand advice...spot on...will familiarize myself with the different programs.
so i'm using roxio here and i am attempting to burn to dvd-r a 225mb wvm file non-compressed (a short movie created using windows movie maker). therefore it should burn without any gliches or problems. will try some dvd+r, what yea think?
cheers

RESULT.....used roxio mydvd. reduced the burn rate speed from 16x to 8x. unbelievable. she's now a smooth operator. popped the dvd into the dvd player and what appeared on the 42" screen was very impressive, the picture quality/transitions are excellent.

i wanna thank you all for the solid advice. i think the combination of checking/correcting & updating drivers etc, done the job.

will try another burn 2moro, let's put it to the test;) i think this burner will be getting a lot more action from now on...absolutely chuffed. i'm off to the shops to get some more of those brilliant verbatim dvd-r's that are on sale.

Thanks saugmon

I must disagree with this statement. I have used LG Drives(HL-DT-ST) for years in my systems and all the ones I build for a living.( I am a PC Tech) They are Excellent Optical drives. I have 2 LG Dual Layer Burners of my own that are 4+ years old and have well over 1000+ burns and reads on each. Still work like new. I do keep my firmware up to date. And I only use Verbatim, Sony, TYs. Occasionally Ritek.
Bad batches of media do happen. Rare with Verbatim, however, it seems it usually is the DVD-R Variety when it does. I only use DVD+R myself.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.
