With the falling prices of HD DVDs and Drives, I was looking at getting the XBox 360 HD-DVD player to use on my PC. Does anybody know the hardware requirements for HD DVDs on a Windows XP Computer? Currently the computers I would be running this on are:
Celeron D 2.93|1GB|ATI 9800 PRO
Core2Quad Q6600|4GB|Nvidia 6800 GTO
E1505|Core2Duo 2GHz|2GB|ATi X1400
XPS Gen 3|P4 3.6 HT|1GB|ATi X1650

I already have the Power DVD Ultra software, its just a matter of hardware. It would be best if the player would run on my Media Center computer or Laptop (Celeron or E1505)
If it helps, All computers are capable of running Guitar Hero 3 without Lag (Yes, the celeron too!)

you can get cheap blue ray. i wouldnt waste money on hd dvd

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...+%2f+DVD+Drives

but playback would be best on the quad machine. i dont think any of your video cards have built in hd decoders so it will use mostly cpu power.

The reasons I am getting HD DVD Currently is because:
1. It is a dead format but its dirt cheap and there are many good movies still out for it on amazon
2. You get 6 free movies with it
3. I will get a Blu Ray player but as a PS3.
4. Since Blu Ray is 1080p and the HD DVD player I looked at is 1080i, the HD DVD would take less power to encode.
5. My TV only does 1080i currently.

I can see that it would be best on the quad but would it be possible on any of my other machines?

Apparantly the drive also comes with the Xbox 360 remote which sells for $20 alone at walmart. I think its a good deal for all it comes with. Would the HD DVDs actually run in 1080i through any of my computers?

Will you play it on a computer monitor or on a tv. if you play on a monitor you will need to have one with a 1080i resolution. but you should have any problems running at full resolution.

ps. buy a xbox 360 media remote and get a free hd dvd player! lol.

So, I got one and all I can say about it is that the PC does recognize it and it does look good. Apparently the one that I bought was broken. The drive never opened. My dad went to go get another so I'll post back with results on how well it actually runs on my computer.

Ok, I got a new one and on my quad, it doesnt play HD DVDs using Power DVD. It recognizes it and all but will play a little audio and freeze. Is my video card not capable enough? It's a 6800 GTO. Software problem? What? I know my computer processor is capable of running HD DVDs.

Actually I looked online and it seems to be a hardware problem. My video card does not support HDCP. I ran the HD DVD player on my laptop and it worked fine so as long as it works on that, Im fine. Ill try it on all my others and let you know but I doubt it'll work since the CPU on a 2GHz Core 2 Duo was around 75% both cores playing the HD DVD.
