I'm burning using a pioneer 105, nero 5.5 and ritek G04 media.

PM: 6GB boot volume (win2K pro SP4)
PS: 30GB app volume (nero, dvd shrink, dvd decryptor)
PM: Pioneer dvr-105
PS: 120GB scratch volume (source files)

Current Adaptec ASPI layer installed. Burning at 1x, 2x or 4x all yields the same result: a successful burn, but failed data verification. I've also got princo, sky, and fuji media. Burn success rate is 100%; data verification success rate is 0%. Data verification fails sue to files being different. I usually see something like "12 files, 8 identical, 4 different, 0 missing."

Am I missing something? Can I trust the Nero data verification? Is there other software I should try for burning that will also do data verfication?

I typically rip using DVD decryptor, then shrink/re-author as necessary using DVD shrink.

Nero 5.5.what?

If it's not the latest version then update it.
Record Now Max is a more reliable piece of software than Nero, although I haven't had any problems with version 6.3.0.0

Hiya slickhorn,

So what is the difference between the files?
(what is the verification failure?)

It could be:
file size.
file content.
CRC check.
Time/Date stamping.

Check what is on HD against what is burned on disk (ignore verification error, read disk if you can).

I have known Nero (various incarnations) to throw this error, when the files have been cross-checked the ONLY thing different was Time/Date stamp, which is insignificant).

Post results please.

Have Fun...

thanks drchips. I've posted a pm in response.

Is it possible this is an aspi problem? I think I may have had the 4.7x adaptec aspi layer installed...I read that it's problematic, but I don't know what the symptoms would be...

I've installed something called compel win aspi, which according to aspicheck is the adaptec 4.60 aspi layer...so maybe that will help.

I'm going to give record now max a shot with the 105 drive after I try Nero with the new aspi layer.

could still be a H/W problem, just not the drive..

look closely at the IDE cable (should be an 80 conductor, ATA66/100/133 cable).
double check master/slave setting on 105 AND 120GB.

remove Nero & reboot
install PrimoDVD & reboot
setup & test

If you can afford a PCI raid/ide card, get one of those & give the 105 its own channel (put the 120GB on the pci card - good one is EIO-AP1680 ATA133 raid controller, costs 14 pounds in UK, about 24 bucks in your money) noticable improvement in overall performance because it will run the 120GB at UDMA6.

okay. I do have a pci IDE raid controller...I removed it in the interests of simplifying my hardware...I'll add the 120GB as PM on that card and leave the 105 as a single drive on the on-board secondary IDE channel.

I'm also gonna uninstall all my burning software and try primodvd with a clean system.

whew. maybe I'll also add the 104 as SM on the pci card and see what happens with that drive...

I do have a virgin IDE cable, so I'll open that up and try it with the 105.

results soon...

hiya slickhorn,

just make sure the pci card will support ATAPI device (cdrom etc), some don't.

Also you may not be able to boot from a cd on the pci card, but you should be ok booting from the 105 on standard.

I have a 104 & a 105 in my system, and prassi allows me to burn to both at the same time (same image OR different images <GRIN>).

Have Fun...

I wanted to try primo prassi however after a quick search, I can't find it. Has it been discontinued?

Best wishes,
Frank

Yes it has

Record Now Max is the revamped version

You could try updating your version of Nero, you are way out of date on the 5.5.10

drchips,

You're my hero! I've had one successful burn with PrimoDVD last night. I left another burning this morning, I'll check it when I get home from work.

Record Now Max crashed repeatedly, so I'm letting that go...and Nero 5.5.10.54 continued to have the data verification error. I'll give Nero 6 a shot later, but I suspect PrimoDVD is the way to go. Reminds me of adaptec Easy CD Creator...I used 3.5c until my old burner died...some software is just as good as it gets.

I like the idea of having multiple burners working...I wonder if my system can handle that...I'll have to try the 104 tonight as well... ;-)

any theories on why Nero would burn improperly?

thanks thanks thanks!!!

Hi guys,

Prassi PrimoDVD is a discontinued product.

Prassi Europe was bought out by VERITAS in 2001.
Veritas used some of the technology in RecordNow Max.
PrimoDVD was then sold to Easy Systems Japan, who incorporated the px engine technology into a lot of their products.

Stability of PrimoDVD is due to the px engine, no reliance on stuff like ASPI or other wonderful interface technologies.

I shall have to build another box and have a real good look at RecordNow Max (I was not impressed the last time I looked at it, maybe it has improved).

NERO is WAY TOO FLAKEY with DVD in my experience, shame to see a lovely product like that get screwed up, as it is great for everything else...

Hi all,

I have built another box with Win2000/sp4, Pioneer 104 (firmware 1.4) & have installed Stomp RecordNow Max version 4.5

It looks and seems to act the same way as Prassi PrimoDVD and I am in the throes of stress testing it now.

From the way it has performed so far it looks like I may be giving it the seal of approval (stability, reliability, repeatability & security are paramount for me - fancy graphics, chrome and all-singing, all-dancing twiddly bits are WAY DOWN my list).

So I may be declaring it a worthy sucessor to PrimoDVD.

If anyone wants to be kept up to date on how the testing progresses, my results and conclusions, then send me a Private Message and I will keep you informed.

Don't rely upon subscribing to this thread to be informed.

I'd like to hear what you find out. I found it to crash a ton, but I may have still have had nero installed when I tried it.

BTW -- I'm curious how you burn to both the 104 and 105. I tried last night, but both discs failed...

I've got an Athlon XP 2600+, 1GB PC3200 RAM...

Currently, the drives are:

PM: 6GB Boot volume
SM: Pioneer 105
SS: 30GB App volume

PCI PM: Pioneer 104
PCI PS: 120GB Source Volume

Hiya slickhorn,

in PrimoDVD:
Tools -> Options -> Advanced,
Drive Error Report == Complete Command
Drives Selection for Simultaneous Recording == Mix any drive
Strategy when Sectors do not..... == Return the Error

Shut down the program.

Re-start Windows & give it a try:
first test should be same job to both drives set to same speed: set to test (so you don't waste disks if your system has a problem).

If/when that works ok, then try it with a burn & verify.

Have Fun...

I had PrimoDVD bundled with my Pioneer 104 many moons ago , gave me nothing but nightmares.
Switched to Nero (probably very early 5.5.3.x version) and haven't had a problem since. ASPI isn't needed as Nero has one included , in Nero Info Tool it'll tell you.
Nero has undergone changes and some ppl had mares with Nero Burning Rom 6 , but I got hold of Nero 6 Ultra package and all is stable.
I stress tested RecordNow Max myself (with Ritek G03) but it failed to impress myself (although I know some users who praise it to the skies).
It's just about finding what works for you , 'innit ;-)
