folks, have been having serious reliability issues with a seagate freeagent 320g ext. h/drive. can anyone recommend a solid reliable ext. h/drive that will store my valuable data? this is going back to the shop and i need a replacement asap.
has anyone else had problems with seagate products? or was i unlucky in the lucky dip :)?
Help.

I have never had problems with Seagate drives but if you are unsatisfied with it, you could always go with a Western Digital Mybook. Those are good. I have the WD passport and I dropped it on a wood floor accidentally and it still works.

I use a Seagate SATA2 internal hard drive, in my external Icy Dock enclosure, and it has been rock solid since I started using it.
It's not an external drive, but works in the same manner as an external drive, at a lot less cost.
Life is good!

i am bringing the seagate ext. h/drive back to the shop in exchange for another seagate drive....am i mad or what? Seagate do have a problem with some of their drives not being recognized.
On their website community forum, there are plenty of annoyed people with the exact same headache as myself.
also the manager where i purchased the drive admitted that there have been a few returns!
my drive was 8 months old before it started playing up on my pc, but i do remember when the drive was only a week or two old i was transfering tunes to a mates laptop and we had thought that all tunes where lost. his laptop did not recognize my ext. drive after transfering the tunes. i was relieved to see all data on my pc later :)
i suppose a good way to put it to the test early, is to transfer data back and forth from different pc's & laptops
an early warning sign is the Windows write delayed>f pop-up.

Why are you getting another Seagate? By what you are saying, looks like the hard drive in the Seagate enclosure is fine but just the enclosure itself is crap. Do what GrandpaBW did.

i purchased the external h/drive so it could be used externally on other pc's. you could be right about the enclosure being the problem as i have an internal 2.5" 40g drive in a icybox enclosure and that too is solid, but the seagate is still under warranty and needs to be replaced because it has faults. its not doing the job it was intended to do.

No, why are you getting another Seagate and not just returning it or opening the enclosure and swapping enclosures?

i don't quite understand what you are trying to say:)
my seagate is still under warranty. therefore the shop is gonna do a straight swap with a new one. if the warranty was up, or if i had to go through seagate personally then maybe i would open that baby up and try different enclosures etc,.
