Are you logged on as a administrator ?
What os do you have? When did this start ? Has it never worked .
Have you changed or added any software lately?

Need more info before we can help.

bean 55, I will try to answer your questions in order, no I am not an administrator,I just know the basics. My O.S. is xp pro. It has been working for the past two years, it began crashing a week ago. I have two dvd drives, luckily the second one is fine. I occasionally download free software, but I allways do a virus check before opening any download. I use AVG.

I was not really concerned about virus as much as conflicts between software. For instance a burning software may conflict with some other burning software because it wants total control of the burner. That conflict could possibly shut down the computer.

Since the one is working that should rule out the problem that happens sometimes when you are not logged in as a administrator and it should rule a software issue.

Since the one is working could it be that the other one is old and worn out? How old is it?

Have you tried putting it into another computer to see if it is the drive that's going bad.

Have you tried the Restore function in WinXP ? To restore back to a date before you had problems. That may tell you if it is a software problem.

Did you change or add any hardware around that time?

I have tried the systems restore, no problems there. I think you are correct when you say the unit is probable worn out. I havent fitted any other hardware for some considerable time. Thanks for your help bean55, I will change the faulty unit.

You acn try to switch the cable from the working drive to the one not working. That would rule out a bad cable, before you buy another unit

It could also be the power supply, if it's getting old the strain of running the dvd may just be enough to cause it to shut down.
