I would suggest switching to either uTorrent or Azureus.
Road Runner is implementing traffic shaping on their network to interfere with bittorrent traffic and, if not already, you will need to use encryption for bittorrent and uTorrent and Azureus have this.
I do not think that ABC has encryption.
Also there is much better support for these clients than ABC.
And here at AfterDawn there are many people who are familiar with Azureus and uTorrent and can help on those.

Not automatically.
First you need to make sure you have an up to date Java, as Azureus uses Java. Verify Java.
When installing Azureus, choose the Classic Interface and Advanced mode. (It has been a while since I have installed clean, so if it does not ask about those, then it can be adjusted later)
You need to clear it (as any BT client) through your software firewall .
There are some guides at Portforward.com Firewalls.
If you have a choice between allowing the Azureus application or its port, I would suggest allowing the application.
If yours is not listed there, post back with make and version and I'll see if I can find a guide.
I know you have no router.
Are you connected through a modem? If so, what is make and model?
Probably not a problem, but some modems have firewall.
There are a couple things to do after this, but one step at a time.

I assume you are using ABC. Correct me if wrong.
You can check and see if the port you have set for your client is open (in other words if the client is cleared through the firewall and router) http://www.canyouseeme.org/
There should also be an indication within the client, but I do not know anything about ABC.
You need to run a speed test and cap upload speed in the client to 80% of your overall upload speed.
http://www.speedtest.net/
And if Road Runner is shaping your bittorrent traffic, you will have to see if ABC has any type of encryption to get around the shaping.

I thought you had, but then you mentioned ABC and the router.
Did you get a Success at canyouseeme.org?
For Azureus on the speed test and internal settings check Good Settings.
On the encryption, check Avoid Traffic Shaping.
I would suggest starting with Level 2, which is shown in the image below.

You have to make a separate rule for TCP and a separate rule for UDP in the router.
The same port number for both-60000 is good.
Did you make an exception for Azureus in your software firewall?
Just to make sure, do you have 60000 set as your port (both TCP & UDP) in Azureus at Tools>Options>Connection.
