one thing i dont know is which lcd sets are new and which are old?
obviously i dont want to be buying 2004 technology. how can we tell which are newer? i only know when xbrs are newer sets by the number after the xbr ie: xbr2,xbr3 and xbr4

Just see the specs of that tv, choose those good for you. Another thing you can see is the price.

Most newer LCD's have at least 3 HDMI ports now as the older ones have only 1 or 2
