Do you have a motherboard that can handle the upgrade? Certain motherboards will support certain processors and different FSB speeds. If you list your brand and model of motherboard, we might be able to provide you a little help.

The motherboard will determine how much you can overclock as well as the type of cooling that you'll be using. You should be able to get the E8200 close to 4 GHz without too much problem. I ran across a site that talked about overclocking that processor and he claimed to get 3.92 GHz with a stock cooler (link here). Obviously, the type of RAM you install will also make a big difference.

There will be a big difference between what you have now and what an overclocked E8200 will provide, especially in speed tests. In the real world, it will mostly depend on what applications you're running as to how much difference you'll notice.

right the reson i ask is because its my 21st bithday soon and my mum and dad said thay will get me a Sapphire ATi Radeon HD 3870 512MB and my girlfriend said that she will get me the E8200 so that leaves me with buying the mobo ands the stuff i will be carrying over from my current system will be

4gb of corsair xms2 ddr800
seatgate 80gb sata 2 hard drive
seatgate 500gbgb sata hard drive
samsung 20x sata dvd-/+rw
570w trust psu
arctic freezer 7 pro
gigabyte 3d aurora case

the main thing i will be doing with it will be coverting mpeg to psp of dvd format and playing games such as need for speed pro street, crysis and call of duty 4 on a 22" tft (1680x1050)
i want to overclock it as much as my ram will allow it as i am a bit of a freak with getting the most out of my systems
thanx
