I have been doing research for weeks about ripping my dvd collection so that I can play my movies over my network.
First off let me explain my set-up. I have three active computers on my network, Apple Macbook Pro, Dell Inspiron laptop, Hp laptop. I also have a relatively powerful Dell Desktop that I have not decided what to do with. And last I have an xbox 360. The Xbox 360 and Desktop are wired and and the three laptops are wireless (the Macbook pro with wireless N using an apple extreme base station, the other two laptops are wireless G using a buffalo router)
I have started ripping some of my movies to and external hard drive in vob format using anydvd and clonedvd2.
My goal is to rip my entire dvd collection to my dell desktop with external hard drive so that I can play them on all my computers and xbox 360. One of my limitations is the lack of codec support from the xbox 360. Another dilemma is that some of the dvd's I want to rip entirley, including menus and bonus material.
I would like to have all the dvds encoded with the best video quality while shrinking them so that they don't take up the space that a vob file would. I would also like to keep the audio intact weather it be surround sound or dts.
I ma trying to stay as clear as possible but any suggestions would be helpful

If you rip DVD it will be exact copy of it unless you specify "Movie Only".
Compressing is only possible with conversion to Mpeg4 (DivX).
If you want to get rid of some features on DVD like extras, extra languages or just movie only, you can use DVD Rebuilder (easy to use), that one has good encoding software included. Rebuilder is not free($30).
