Also this statement:
RipGuard
Protecting DVD Content Owners from Consumer Piracy
RipGuard makes it possible for content providers to make their products
available to customers in a timely and cost-effective manner while
significantly reducing the creation of illegal copies for piracy.
DVD content protected with RipGuard dramatically reduces the ripping of
copyrighted content. DeCSS software that breaks the CSS encryption
found on DVDs is widely available. You can?t depend on it to protect your
valuable assets. RipGuard protects against most DeCSS ripping
procedures, making it impractical for all but the most determined to
violate their license agreement.
Pyramid of Determination
While no encryption method is 100 percent foolproof, the goal of a good
security solution is to deter the majority of violators. Between 85 to 95
percent of all consumers lack the patience and the technical know-how to
break through the extra layer of protection RipGuard provides, causing
them to give up on making illegal copies. Often, casual users end up
purchasing the DVD content they were trying to copy.
Only 5 percent of users have the knowledge and determination required to
break through the RipGuard protection and decrypt the underlying CSS.
These individuals represent a small subset of the total population and are
not likely to buy content at any cost. RipGuard deters more than 90
percent of all users, leading to a more fair return on your investment.
Macrovision RipGuard helps content providers ensure:
Complete Quality Care
RipGuard protects the integrity of your digital content while maintaining
compatibility with PCs and both portable and standalone DVD players.
The RipGuard system has been THX? Verified, ensuring the audio and
video quality of the original digital content. There is simply no consumer
penalty to protecting your DVD content with RipGuard.
Complete Compatibility with Today's DVD Players and PCs
Macrovision guarantees DVDs protected with RipGuard will play on all PC
and consumer electronic DVD players.
Our DVD certification process includes testing and certifying every DVD
device before and after market release, resulting in pristine playback of
RipGuard titles on every player?today and tomorrow.

So they are saying that they will supply you with an expensive solution for a 95% non-existant problem, the problem 5% being those pesky people who think they are entitled to make a legal backup copy of their own property.
Create an imaginary problem and cash in on 'fixing' it.
Meanwhile Sony sells encrypted disks which are not to be copied on their badged DVD burners on their badged media - talk about having it both ways..

Give me a rip-guard protected title.. and we will see how secure it is when it is run in a machine which doesn't know what DRM means.
Will it stand the # vlc dvd:/dev/dvd@1 --sout "#standard{access=file,mux=ps,dst=/home/user/file.ps}" test?? I very much doubt it.... muahahaha
That's without even getting clever and doing a # dd <disk> --sout "#standard{access=file, xxxxxxxxxxxxx -edited 4 or 5 tools-don't want to get aD into trouble- /user/file.iso"
Which I sometimes need to do just to watch a rental dvd. They haven't got it yet have they??
