Have you capped your upload speed in uTorrent to 80% of your overall upload capacity?

Running uTorrent (or any BT client) at more than 80%, or unlimited, will negatively affect your internet browsing.

You may also have to limit your global connections to 200 or less if limiting upload does not solve your issue.

its not utorrent doing it, its downloading bittorrent files in general. they just eat a good chunk of your bandwidth. you can try switching to another bittorrent client but you will have the same problem

Yea 2000 will clog you up, especially on the router.

The best thing to do is use the Options>Speed Guide.
This will automatically set all your ”Torrent settings properly for your upload speed.

There is a link to a speed test on the Speed Guide.
It is your upload speed that matters.
You should stop all internet activity, including torrents, before taking the test.
You should also take it a few times to get a reliable average in kilobits (kbs).

Once you have an average upload speed, you can use the pulldown menu, where it says Connection Type and choose the one closest to yours.
Those speeds are listed in kilobits (kbs), the rest of ”Torrent shows speeds in kilobytes (kBs).
This will automatically adjust several ”Torrent settings.
Press Use Selected Settings to save the changes.

If you have any Qs, post back.

thanks. i set my global connections to 150 and the other one to 170. i was wondering, when you go to preferences, then bit-torrent, which features should be checked?

and about the speed, is it ok if i leave it empty? because my internet connections vary a lot every once in a while.

also, i have my internet working with utorrent open. but the internet is slow though. is there a way to speed up the internet? if i do, will it slow down my utorrent speeds?

At options>preferences>bittorrent, you can enable both DHT options but only for public sites, not private. And also Protocol Encryption: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 You should be using some figure for your upload even if it is on the low side. If you're on Cable, do a check after school lets out and at a high use time, say 8:00 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday, your speed should be at it's lowest then.

At options>speed guide>connection type, set it to 512 kb and try that. 512 kb is a bit over 80% but 384 kb is quite a bit under. Things are set automatically to that speed for you.

The xx512k would be the right setting.
That will set you at 47kBs upload cap which would be 80% of the 471kbs (59kBs).
