windows xp dvd-rom drive problem

i have a windows xp service pack 2 and the dvd and cd-rom drives do not read the discs... I CAN HEAR THE DISKS SPINNING BUT IT NEVER LOADS i go into my computer and click on the dvd icon and it says "please insert a disk into drive E:" and when i click on the CD-R drive it opens but there are no files at all on the cd but when i put it into my laptop it works fine can somebody help me please

try uninstall the drive and the IDE channel in device manager reboot and let windows reinstall it . also have you tryed a firmware update?

im not sure if i understand the queation exactly. i think what ur asking is how to get a windows xp sp2 disc to boot in ur pc so u can reformatt. if so u will have to pay attention to ur boot screen and go into ur bios and set it to boot from ur cd/dvd drive first.

na its just that the computer does not rad cd's at all.. the cd drive works fine but its the computer
