Malfunctional DVD-RW drive - gotta get it workin again!

Does anyone know anything about... well ok, First of all. I own a Pioneer DVD-RW 1x burner that came with my Sony VAIO. It was my first time to try to use a DVD-R because usually I just use a DVD-RW and burn, erase, burn etc, but I was trying to produce a movie of mine and I wasn't gonna spend twice as much on DVD-RW's yah know so the person I am makin the movies for goes out and buys Memorex DVD-R - 4x. I was thinkin hey, it will work with 1x, that is just max speed. To make a long story short, I try at least 3 different types, and when I got to the last DVD-R I tried, my DVD-RW drive does not work at all anymore. I put a cd in and I hear it spinning and then it doensn't do a thing. I read a little paper inside the box the DVD's came in, and it said somethin like this " Warning, for the owners of Pioneer 1x and 2x burners, check for compatibility with your yata yata, use of this disc may damage the disc or your device", now... I think it has damaged my device. I tried hooking up a CD-ROM drive and the names of the CD's showed up on the drive but they wouldn't open so maybe there is a problem with my computer. I have downloaded all the latest updates got rid of all my viruses and it still doesn't work, does anyone have any words of advice????????????????
