I thought I would give torrents a try. Thinking about using Utorrent as my client or maybe even BitComet. My internet is set up like this - from actiontec m1000 modem to belkin wireless router to computer. The computer is hardwired from the router to computer. I only use the wireless for another laptop in the house and not using it for Utorrent/Bitcomet etc... On the computer I use Comodo firewall protection. Reading some of the posts Im thinking to get the best upload/download speeds I will need to set up port forwarding. Is this correct? And if so will I need to set it up in all three places, firewall-router-modem?
One more thing? is peergaurdian enough protection along with the firewall-router-modem?
Thanks for any imput.
PeerGuardian's protection in bittorrent is to block "known" Anti-P2P group's IPs to keep them from interfering.
It is not perfect, but it is about all there is in that area.
I have not had any security issues as a result of bittorrent, but with those 3 you are covered well.
You will need to watch what you download to avoid possible virus or trojan (I have never had either from bittorrent).
I'd go with utorrent over BitComet just because BC is banned on some private sites because of a reporting/cheating issue for ratios. Other than that, no particular reason. You will need to port forward your router and maybe modem if it contains a firewall and make utorrent an exception in Commodo. There are guides for both at port forward: http://portforward.com/guides.htm You will also probably need a Static ip address, not hard and they have a guide for that too: http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm Do a speedtest a few times and select the number nearest yours at options>preferences>connection type, both should be kb, kB is totally different 1kB = 8 kb. Use a port over 10,000 and disable randomize port and UPnP at options>preferences>connection and use Protocol Encryption: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 Peer guardian isn't really a firewall per se, it blocks known organizations tha report their findings to the MPAA/RIAA, not 100% but very good. Check this list in case your ISP throttles torrents too: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs Post back any other questions you may have, someone will answer it. Edit: too slow
