I have been backing up several movies and PS2 games for the past few months with no problem. After about a week long lull in burning I began to burn some more of my PS2 iso's. I allways burn them onto DVD-R media for the lasers safety. The media I have been using is HP Lightscribe DVD-R. When I back up my movies I use Verbatim DVD+R's. Well after backingup about 10 PS2 iso's. I started to recode and burn american ganster. I ran into a few problems but eventually got DVDFab to create a iso for me. I then tried using dvd-decrypter and dvd clone, nero, and dvd fab, to burn the iso. Each one of them would run into various problems or freeze up. I thought it was some new copy protection so I gave up. Many of the errors I got were "bad media" or "power calibration error" messages. I would go down the stack of my Verbatim DVD's putting a new one in each time and still would get the same message. This would happen after maybe 20 burn retries from the program on each disc. Well today I burned another ps2 iso no problem onto the HP's. So I wondered what would happen if tried to burn the movie onto DVD-R. Sure enough on the first try it worked. Along with other movies that I couldnt burn previously. It would only work as long as I used dvd-r. So it seems my burner or the programs dont like dvd+r anymore. By the way before I had these problems I was burning backups of movies on this same stack of DVD+R's with no problem.
Does anyobdy have any idea what this is?

first off ...... Verbatim outsources it's DVD production to many different manufactures. Usually they are good! but I noticed that some DVD+R, 16x Verbatims were made in India! These are not so good! what is your make and model of your DVD burner? some burners will burn better with the 8x media better than the 16x media. Your burner just might need a firmware update to correct this problem. Don't think that just because you got a stack spindle of the same brand doesn't mean that the quality control or the different outsource manufacturer is the same! some stacks have different manufacturers in there even though it's the same brand of disk! don't assume anything.

I never heard of that before = lasers safety
can you explain that? DVD+Rs are quite good and if you can booktype your media to DVD-ROM then you can trick your player to think it's playing a store bought DVD! again.... what is your make and model of your burner?

Thanks for the quick relply. I have a HP1040d external dvd burner, sorry I ment to include that. I did the get the spindle of Verbatims at Sams Club, and we know they like to buy things on the cheap, so these DVD's could have been made in india.

In regards to the DVD-R's. I have heard that Sony's lasers in the PS2's can be jinky when it comes to playing backed up media. In this case I have a PS2 with a modification chip. It seems like the majority opinion that it was best to use DVD-R's on the playstation. I dont know for sure because before I learned about this I was sucesfully playing DVD+R's in the unit.

That sounds Awesome! I have another ps2 with no modifications that I would love to try that out on.

here are some tips for you about having compatibility with most players:

1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

here is a media guide for you:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
this guide is not without it's flaws...... it's just a good indication on what's out there and what's good.... I don't agree with the TDK classification. It's second rate at best.
use DVDIdentifier to identify your media: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
and now you can check out your Verbatim disks!
