i have bought an external hard drive to bring to work and have been loading it up with cds and a few dvds. After i decrypt the dvd to my desk top, i can then play the movie. but once i move the decrypted dvd files to my external hard drive, it will not play. it gives me a windows media player error message that says this...

"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because the disc prohibits playback in your region of the world. You must obtain a disc that is intended for your geographic region."

Now, i made sure that it was set for USA before decrypting. what gets me is that it works fine on my desk top. i dont want to have to move the files to my desk top everytime i want to watch a movie because it takes a bit of time.

any suggestions?

i'm not quite understanding your problem..could you provide more detail..
eg: what software did you use to decrypt dvd to you external HDD?
and do you know what format after decrypt ( it's could be some kind of image file)..
for easy way , just rip dvd into .avi,.wmv formats..
Have you try to open it with another video player software?
eg: powerdvd,windvd,nero showtime..

@dvdlover7

I've seen this with regard to Vista and external drives and, as you say, it might be solved using another player, VLC MPC etc.

I have vista and that also is the cause of my problem. i turned UAC off and from what i read, that will not allow me to watch movies from my external. i simply turned it on and it plays now. so i wont have to worry about this at work since i have windows xp pro.

thanks anyways

That was one of the suggestions, but I didn't want to get into it until I new it was a Vista machine.
That's good to know and thanks for following up.

WOW!! Thanks a lot. The suggestion to turn on Vista's UAC, automatically corrected the problem. Now I'm playing DVDs with no issues off of my WD Mybook II external hard drive.

The only wak thing is I have to have use UAC which I hate, but, oh well.
