hi, on my friends work laptop he has a problem where he has installed windows xp and someone has configured his copy of xp to run on their network (via network user log on etc) and the problem is in c drive properties under the 'sharing' tab it shows the c drive as shared (fig 1). ofcourse if you change this to 'don't share' it accepts it for the windows session and as soon as you log out or restart windows its back to the old settings (where the hardrive is shared). The reason this is a problem is because this computer has to be connected for my friend to do his work at an organisaton although he has files that he has done work for which he does not wish to be accessible (as he has put lots of time and effort into making them).

fig 1

Also another problem is if you cick on the 'permissions' button it shows an error message (fig 2) despite the fact that he is the administrator for the laptop!

fig 2

is there anyway to prevent this as it seems as if windows has been somehow tampered with so that the hardrive is permently accessible throughout the network?
any help would much be apriciated!! thanks :)

That's normal. Windows XP Pro automatically creates a system share for the c:\ drive, thus it's displayed with a dollar sign ($).
