Thank you for considering my problem.

Basically, my problem is getting my computer to operate the DVD-RAM
functions of the Panasonic LF-D521. I'm assuming this is a driver problem, but I
may be wrong.

The problem started when I replaced a 10GB HDD with a 120GB drive. I
didn't make any jumper changes and put the new drive in the same place
as the old one (slave to the LF-D521). Also, I've reopened my computer
to be sure that all cables are connected properly and secure. The
LF-D521 worked fine prior to the HDD switch, but now it works only for
the CD-DVD/-r/RW functions. The DVD-RAM part of the unit is not
working. It shows the unit as having a problem in "Device Driver." I
have some step-by-step details on what I did below, and have included
some screen captures of the process (and Device Manager). The PPT file
contains all of the images and is clearer. I don't know if you have
PowerPoint so I'm including the images separately also.

- After the problem began, I tried to install the updated driver
from http://panasonic.jp/dvdram/english/
- Should update driver from meiudf.sys v.3.0.6.0 to 3.0.8.0
- Windows appears to be overwriting my driver with the generic
driver (disk.sys)
- Every time I try to update/replace/delete the generic disk.sys
driver, Windows reinstalls it at boot and uses it instead of the
Panasonic driver

- Went through "update Driver" routine
- Windows STILL installs disk.sys driver in Drivers folder
- If I select "search for a compatible driver (recommended)" I
browse to updated driver location and click OK
- Wizard returns the inf/disk.inf and installs the disk.sys driver
- At update device driver wizard selected "Display a list of known
drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver"
- After clicking next I get "optical disk drive" highlighted
- Click "Have disk"
- Browse to folder where I have the Panasonic updated driver info
unzipped
- Select dvdram.inf. Get a message "the specified location does not
contain information about your hardware

- renamed disk.inf and disk.PNF in the winnt/inf directory. This
also doesn't allow W2k to use the Panasonic drivers.

Here are some screen aptures of what I get from one wizard option:
