Hi all,

im having some trouble with a wireless card built into my acer laptop.

I currently have a netgear dg834g router that has been fnctioning correctly for a very long time. I have my desktop pc conected via ethernet into one port on the router which receives a speed of averagly 4.10 mbps.

I then have another desktop pc that is within a few metres of the router that connects wirelessly and will receive around 3.9 mbps.

I have a third desktop that is downstairs in a conservatory so has to go through many walls to get to the router and yet still manages to get around 3.6 mbps on a weak signal strength.

We then come to the laptop in question. It has never received above 2mbps wirelessly, i thought this was due to it mainly being used downstairs and not making a good conection to the router, so this morning i decided to bring it upstairs within a metre of the router to see how it would perform, it stil only received 1.9mbps.

I then got a spare ethernet cable and connected the laptop to the router via ethernet, disabled the wireless connection and enabled the ethernet connection and yet it still only receives 1.96mbps.

I tried turning off all of the firewall off and still no luck.

The laptop is an "Acer 7003WSMi" and i have looked into the settings and it has a "Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter" bilt into it.

The spec says it is capable of 802.11 b.g wireless LAN, the laptop is receiving full excellent signal strength so i am struggling to see where the fault may be.

Our internet is currently the tiscali 8mbps package and our line is capable of receving 5mbps, dont know if this information is of relevance just trying to cover everything.

Hope someone can help

Thanks

Chris

hmmm. maybe your cards dont support connection faster then 2 Mbps. but they should if you used ethernet cable it goes to 100 Mbps. hmmm. can you give some more details about your network adapter

Yeah i was thinking that, it is only the one card that isnt going faster than 2 mbps.

The other 2 wireless desktops are receiving just under 4 mbps on wireless

and when the laptop is connected via ethernet it says 100mbps but once a speedtest is run it only shows 1.96mbps actual browsing / downloading speed.

I have tried it using several different speedtests still all with the same results.

I dont have any information on the wireless adapter other than when you go into the settings it gives the name and model of it ""Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter"" i have tried googling it but only very briefly so there may be some information on it but couldnt see much

hope that helps

maybe the problem is that your other two desktops take too much connection so your router might be overloaded. there are mostly configured to give a connection up to 10 Mbps i think. i never used one. i use my laptop as a wireless router when i need to connect more than one comps on internet with ad-hoc other case is that your computer is weak. ill try google some more :D.
oh yeah, maybe your other two comps interfere with your laptops connection. did you try shutting down the other two and then connect. i dont really believe this online speed tests. read this also:
