D:\ is not accessible; the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

I have a Toshiba Satellite A80 with a multi drive - MATSHITA UJ831S.
The laptop is nearly 2 years old and since almost 1 1/2 years I have been intermittently facing this problem.

About six months ago I restored the OS using the original restoration DVD and the problem was sorted for a short while. In fact the instance of the problem is totally unpredicatble.

yesterday it read and copied files from a cd(after making a lot of scratchy noises) while it would not open files on DVD.
Today I have been able to play DVD movies but can not read from a mpeg4 home recorded dvd. Even the restoration DVD refuses to work.

Last 3 days I have been seriously searching for solutions. My own feeling is that some software is blocking acess to the drive.

Also noteworthy is that the laptop originally came with SONIC DLA and Record now software which I have ended up removing somehow.

So my main question is that is it possible that the multidrive is not working because I have removed SONIC DLA.

Someone please guide

I suspect it is the drive. Matshita drives are pretty crappy. Laptop drives can be very finicky at times.

It seems odd that it reads movie DVDs but not data DVDs. At any rate check the link above which basically results in making sure the correct data transfer mode is enabled for the burner.

I have already looked at the thread you reffered to and tried the many different solutions discussed in earlier threads about the same problem.

In fact my question is specific that: can this problem be bcos I have removed the SONIC DLA programme that was preloaded?
do you think it is possible that some imporatnt files were removed or corrupted?
or is it possible that DLA software is essential for running multidrives?

please guide

Packet writers like DLA can actually cause problems with burning so they are usually removed unless the user actually needs a packet writer.

Your burner reads some DVDs like movies, apparently just not some data DVDs or is it all data DVDs?

Borrow an external DVD drive and see if you have the same problems. If so, it's likely a hardware/system/other software problem. If the external drive works, I'd lean toward the drive itself being the problem. With the external drive, you might be able to get the restore disks to read and you can try restoring your system again.

If you're feeling up to it, remove your drive and restart your system. Then power down and reinstall the drive.
