i have to change it to one of these which one is the easiest and fastet, and what do i use to do this? Video files, such as Windows Media Video (.wmv), AVI (.avi), MPEG-1 (.mpeg, .mpg), and MPEG-2 (.mpeg, .mpg) files.

if you're ripping a DVD to your hard drive then you can use a simple program that will make 2 folders, it's the VIDEO_TS folder where the files for the DVD is and Windows Media Player will play these files! The program is DVDFab HD Decryter: http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm
this programs will rip the DVD to your hard drive..... then just open up the VIDEO_TS folder and double click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO (this file will give instructions to Windows Media Player to play the DVD that is on your hard drive). you can look in the glossary what an IFO, VOB, and BUP files are. It will explain a lot. But once you have this then you can play the ripped DVD on your hard drive with Windows Media Player.

thanks for the info, i went to where i have mydvd's ripped to, clicked on the file you said , and played with media player, it worked.....but i want to store them here in the libary, so i can "share" with my kids xbox 360, i think they can only be shared to the 360 if they are stored here. ( he leaves my dvd's on the floor, they get scratched and the dogs eat them, or his freinds steal them )

you wanted your movies on the hard drive and then you can play them on the computer. To copy to a DVD that will play onto Xbox then you need a program that will encode them to a smaller foot print that can be burned to a single sided blank DVD. DVDShrink is freeware that can do just that..... here are guides for you:

http://www.dvdshrink.info/compilation.php
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/BBMayo_Guides.html

just read and you can do anything! good luck.

no, not copy to dvd form hard drive, if i get my dvd'd on my hard drive which i've done and then get them into windows media player format, i can share them to the xbox 360 on my home network, i have found a program that does it but it takes about 4 hours per moive, thats silly. i got them on my harddrive 30 mins max per movie, theres got to be a faster way?

Hi there-
This thread has been helpful, I have DVDs that are region 2 that I want to watch on my region 1 laptop. My problem is that once I use DVDfab Decrypter, I have the video file you mention, but when I play it using Windows Media player I only get sound. Is this a decryption issue or a Windows Media issue? If I play one of the individual Video files on Quicktime I can watch it, but can't watch the whole thing as it doesn't know what the ISO file is. Help!

@mcgowan08 ....... welcome to afterdawn. You should start your own thread and ask your question there instead of asking for help in a thread that is old now. By asking your question in someone else's thread is called HIJACKING THE THREAD. It is only meant to be for the original question made by the original starter of the thread. ......... but you're new...... so here goes:

if you have a DVD on the hard drive now you should be able to play the whole movie with Classic Media Player or some other region free player. If that's all you want then I would use DVDDecrypter and make the DVD on your hard drive Region FRee.... it's in the settings somewhere. I forget. I really don't need to use that feature as I only have region 1 DVDs where I live but DVDDecrypter does what DVDFab HD Decrypter does but makes it region free and then you can play it in Windows Media Player as a DVD. there are plenty of other ways of making a DVD region free ...... just keep searching the threads and you will see. good luck.
