Just noticed that CC has some Philips 16X media on sale this week. I found info on prior media made by Philips but not this one. Anyone know how this media code out. Probably settle for some Verbs but was curious about this one.

Thanks,

I suggest that you settle for the Verbs,
Philips are CMC-MAG disks. Good for coasters and giving disks to your favorite enemies, bad for backing up anything important.

phillips dvd is the worst brand I have ever purchased. The dvd's feel really light in your hand. I actusaly was getting a quality test of zero on some of them. This was my first encounter with CMC-MAGS. I would recommend sony or verbs instead.

I stay away from them as well.

Staple's got Sony on sale and they are pretty decent.Look for the Made in Japan on the outer wrappers and you may get lucky and get a hold of some Sony tys!!! The sony Ty's also got a white octagon foam spacer on the top-holding the discs in place inside the tub. Some sony spindles have a white label over that foam spacer, so you can't see what spacer is in there.

The Sony disks are great in my opinion, but alas I haven't seen any 100 pack Sony which code out as TY-G03 disks, all the spindles in my area now have a paper cover over the hub so that you can't see the white octagonal spacer. (Boo-Hiss) But the Sony disks are first rate.

I also bought some philips DVD-r.
I've been reading through this forum the past hour and still not very wise on this subject.

Everyone talks about buying verbatims that are made in Singapore. But is that just for Dual Layer discs? I just want 4.7GB DVD-r to use on my Sony DVD Recorder/player.

My local computer shop has these for sale
http://www.mdcomponents.co.uk/products/d...dID=DVD4.7-R-34

are these the ones I should get?

because I bought these today

The main thing with philips, and most brands of blank dvd media,is the outsourcing. Different manufacturers make their media for the same speed and format. Here's some courtesy of Dogbomb's sticky:

Philips DVD+R 2.4x (CMC MAG.R01)
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (RICOHJPN R00)
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (RITEK R01)
Philips DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG F01)
Philips DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPN R01)
Philips DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG E01)
Philips DVD+R 8x (Philips 081)
Philips DVD+R 8x (RICOHJPN R02)
Philips DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Philips DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Philips DVD+RW 4x (PHILIPS 041)
Philips DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)

There's no mention of the Philips 16x,but looking at their history of manufacturers, they're likely to do the same with them.

Notice the +8x speed and 3 different manufacturers. 3 different manufacturers so you don't know who made them until you open up the tub..

Those ricohs are pretty good, but not the philips and cmags. You may have excellent results on one tub and nest tub, problems. Manufacturers may have switched between the tubs.

Some brand names can have up to 4 different manufacturers on the same format/speed rate.

Verbatim: They're generally some of the best. Now with the Made In India tubs clogging the stores, issues are rising. The best Verbatim +/- R Verbatim is made in Japan and Taiwan. The best DL Verbatims are made in Singapore.

Ordering from phone/net can be difficult to know which country they were made in.
If you can look at the outer wrapper up close, then you can pick out the better verbs and maybe even get a hold of some Made in Japan Verbatim Tys!!!!!

Thank you very much! That's made things a lot clearer for me! :)

I downloaded DVD Identifier and it gave me this info on the philips disc.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:INFOMEDIAR30]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Infomedia Inc.]
Manufacturer ID : [INFOMEDIAR30]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V5.0.1 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I'm not sure what to make of that! :D
What 'grade' of disc do I have?

Also I've found a website that sells DVD media in the uk that says what 'type' of disc it is.

http://www.dvdshoponline.co.uk/16x_DVD__R_Blank_Media.html

The verbatims here are MCC 03RG20. Are these the type that are made in Japan or Taiwan?

There are also some Taiyo Yuden, these are the 'grade a' discs right?

Sorry for all the questions but I archive a lot of videos for my website and I don't want to loose any work!

That MCC media code means they are not made by Taiyo Yuden. You'll have to look at the outer shrink wrapper/paper wrapper for the country they were manufactured in. Even though Verbatim is made in several countries-several manacturers, these manufacturers are suppose to use the advanced metal AZO dye and verbatim's strict quality standards.

Sony does the same thing. Different manufacturers from different countries, but using the same exact MID code.Japanese Sony are very good, taiwanese sony pretty good, and any other country- avoid like the plague..

Infomedia: I've never heard of them and I'd be leary of them. Keep burn speed down to 4x. They may burn but playback is where the crappy media bites people.

Thank you very much again!
So I guess I should just stick to buying the Taiyo Yuden which are there? They are quality no matter where they come from or where I buy from? I hope anyway :)))
