I'm looking for a DVD burner or re-writer whatever they are called - I'll be using it to rip TV programs I have recorded using my Samsung R120 DVD recorder, on to my hard drive and then edit them and burn them to another DVD-R and also keep a back up of the video file on my hard drive.
So what DVD rewriter would I need and would anyone be able to advise what software I could use?
The DVD's I am using are DVD-R and DVD-RW - any advise on what the best make discs to use would also be beneficial, thanks.
I can just advise some good brands of rewriters/burners are Pioneer (fairly priced too) perhaps Sony same with the discs go for quality brands and never cheaper inferiors Sony Verbatim the Taiyo Yuden's (genuine) are highly rated
good editing software would be Nero 7 or above but the full version can cost an arm and a leg

There are many good brands, Lite-On, BenQ,LG, however LG does not support all the features of Nero Speed testing.
Sony is usualy too expensive for what it has. Try to get DVD burner that burn dual layer discs and if you want to get Light scribe feature on it, it is not any more than one without it.
You can go on web site and check what people say about each brand.
Good brand disc is important.
I do not know about Sony, but Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are good.
Editing software are many, it all depends what you want to spend.

Nero come as a package. It is around $80US.
If you want editing software, try TMPGEnc DVD Author. If you want to edit Mpeg DVD files without re encoding try Mpeg Video Wizard DVD.
These are all editing and authoring in one package. They all lack flexibility in menu creation, but it all depends what you want.
There are other packages, but it get costly.
In that case you need editing software and DVD authoring software.
I use TMPGEnc XPress for editing and DVD Lab Pro for authoring.
Ok, thanks for the further advice, it looks like I'm gonna get a new PC with a Pioneer or Sony DVD re-writer in it, so thats taken care of.
Now I've taken screenshots of the file types I have from my DVD recordings and I'll then expain in more detail exactly what I want to do with them in editing terms, as I don't want to drop $80/£40 on a piece of software that doesn't do what I want it to lol.
What I would like to do is to transfer these recordings to me computer and edit out the adverts, then create a back up of the edited file onto my computers hard drive and then burn a cop to a DVD-R for archiving and for lending to friend to play on his DVD player. I may also want to be able to burn the back up that I have put on the computers hard drive to a DVD-R in the future, so waht is the best format to back it up as, ISO or whatever else there is?
And I'm not really interested in creating menus or any other fancy stuff on the DVD's that I will create.
Is this all possible with Nero? If not what other recommendations do you have?
