Hey guys, so below I have listed all the parts I purchased for my latest computer venture. I intend to this summer buy a 42in 1080p LCD so I can use my computer to watch/record, etc etc etc that an HTPC can do on the new LCD... I have several questions:
1. I have comcast and they are switching to all digital here in chicago very soon, if they haven't already... what kind of PC TV Tuner card do I need? Is it even worth buying one right now, or should I wait until (and IF) cablecard versions are available?
2. Any recommendations for the TV? I'll probably want cablecard built in since I can't get it on my PC, and don't want to rent another box. (i'm assuming after the switch to all digital, getting programming from the wall will not work)
3. this question is related to the first two... If I get a tv with cablecard, is there any way to set up the system so I can have my cable connected to the TV, but also with my computer so I can still use tivo like features??? so basically, I'll be using the computer to record TV shows from my TV... My TV will be used to watch the TV shows I don't want to record. The two in combination will be used to watch DVDs BluRay photos, etc. etc.
My build:
mobo: Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4
cpu: Intel E2160 at 3.0Ghz (upgrade to penryn quad later)
gpu: MSI HD3870 OC edition
sound: Onboard sound (upgrade to pcie sound after purchasing LCD)
s/sys: Logitech Z-5500 (should I get a home theater system or will
this be ok???)
HDD: 500Gb WD SE16
PSU: Cooler Master Real Power Pro 650W
case: Cooler Master CM690
Sony DVDRW Drive (will get bluray after getting LCD TV)
generic all in one card reader
I think that's about it. This is a new build, but I have already purchased the parts listed, and the system is all put together and functional... I cannot change these parts, so please respond to the above questions not my build! :)
To give you very basic info that may help in concerning your setup:
1) Most all cable/sat is digital anyway. This new FCC "all digital" law will only effect OTA transmissions. You can still use analog from a cable/sat box to your TV.
2) You will not be able to record HDTV on your computer. (unless it is OTA or "New" technology lets you, but it will be encrypted) EX: You can not record HBO Movies with the computer setup in HD. You should be able to record in SD and stereo sound only.
3) I tried to do the same thing you are doing to KEEP HD movies in AC3, and had a hell of a time with the AC3. The sound was very important to me, and everything I tried failed. I can only transfer movies in stereo and record in real time "Standard def".
Bottom line:
If you are wanting to use your computer as a Tivo setup for HD, you will find that you can not do it. Unless that "cablecard" lets you, but still you won't be able to keep the stuff you record because it will be encrypted.
wow I'm sorry I forgot all about this thread I created with recent PC problems... thanks for the info!
Let me make sure I understand what you are saying though... The new "digital" regulations ONLY apply to OTA signals... so if Comcast switches to "all digital", I will still be able to receive cable in all of my bedrooms that DO NOT have a set top box??? If that's true, then that's all I needed to know!
