Please forgive me, I an quite unsure of where to put this. So many subforums! I'm terribly new here. I'll put it here since, well, the problem started with ripping. Should there be a better place, if a Mod could move this, that would be great. :)

Okay! Now on to the problem at hand. Just as the title says.

DVD drive isn't reading anything. RipIt4Me tells me there is no disc in the drive, DVDFab tells me to please insert a DVD, DVD Shrink tells me there is no disc. My Computer's icon doesn't change to show the presence of a DVD, and if I click it, tells me to insert a disc.

I don't understand it at all. Just last week I ripped and burned North by Northwest without a hitch. Then tonight I tried to burn Alice in Wonderland and/or National Treasure. And all this greeted me. A friend mentioned he had issues with Disney movies, so I tried two other movies, Catch Me If You Can and Troy. Both started to be acknowledged, but ended up producing the same responses as the two Disney movies.

It makes no sense. The drive still reads games, so I'm not sure what that means. Under Device Manager it's name claims to be HL-DT-DT DVDRRW GSA-H30L SCSI, if that helps?

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: Now the drive isn't registering anything. DVDs, CDs, games... nothing. This computer is probably only about 8 months old at the most, so I'm really not sure what could be wrong with it...

In Device Manager, expand 'IDE Controllers...', and since the burner is probably on the Secondary Channel, right click on that channel and 'Uninstall', reboot and recheck the drive operation.
All this does is reinstall the drivers.

Thank you for the handy screenshot!

I'm on Vista, so the names are bit different.

Which would it be?

I don't know - but 'standard dual channel....' might do.

I uninstalled it, rebooted, it reinstalled at boot-up, but RipIt4Me and/or DVDFab are still not showing the Disney movies. It did show Troy though?

try this unplug your dvd drive-->start computer and turn off computer, plug in your dvd drive and start computer again, there might be driver problem with vista..
if you have own orginal vista then download update sp1 for it, just release about 2 weeks ago (official release not crb or beta)...sp1 fixed a lot of problem and as so far i have not found anything wrong with vista sp1 yet..eg: without sp1 when you install 4gb of ram into your pc or notebook it's show only 3gb (1 gb is missing),install sp1 fixed this problem and huge different in performance.

Thanks for the response.

What do you mean unplug the drive though?

I've been trying to install SP1 most of the day. It kept spewing out 0x800B0100 and 101139 error messages. It shows up in Windows Update, but fails, and the installer gives the above error messages.

As for the burning, Alice has managed to sneak through RipIt4Me a couple times, but gets stuck in limbo with DVD Decrypter with CSS and parsing errors?

The drive itself is thinking hard and making lots of unpleasant "thudding" noises.
