Very basic guide: http://www.zeropaid.com/news/6184/uTorre...ent+downloading Ignore the last post, old article and not true. utorrent was bought by Bram Cohen who developed Bittorrent and initially there was some concern but that was over a year ago: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=17279 Old but good info: http://www.dessent.net/btfaq/#what Here's a good search site: http://btjunkie.org look for more seeds than peers on files and that they have ever completed, use PeerGuardian when downloading (kind of firewall that blocks companies that report your d/l habits to the MPAA, RIAA, not 100%). Use Port Forward for any Router, Static address (not necessary if you don't have a router) issues: http://portforward.com/guides.htm A few settings in utorrent, Protocol Encryption: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 and at options>preferences>connection, use a port over 10,000, uncheck UPnP and, if you use a router, uncheck randomize port. There's a couple of other things like your ISP blocking torrents, like I said, very basic but this should get you going, just post back any more questions you have and someone will help (you'll have a few questions). Edit: And don't link to any coprighted material or mention downloading it.

PeerGuardian here depending on OS: http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ I believe only the beta works on Vista. Or,you can add a filter to utorrent but I've not used it: http://www.teckh.com/?p=87

No idea why, never used it, maybe someone knows. Try the beta for Vista, been out quite a while: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Fi...ardian-Pr.shtml just a thought; is LimeWire open when this happens?

Have a look into Protowall, I think it supports Vista.

Forget the BS.. trials by pro p2p groups have shown utorrent to throw packets to ip's which are in blocklists.. there may be nothing more to it than badly written software with memory leaks, but a torrent client should not connect, or allow connections to, any ip in a blocklist..(no point linking because the reports are on strictly grey hat hacker sites.. invite only)
azureus has a peer screen called safepeer,a plugin.. and it works flawlessly on vista while not screwing up other internet functionality.

Absolutely right, Azureus does have Safepeer and support Vista but a little complicated for a newcomer from what I've read. As for utorrent, just personal preference. My personal opinion is that all the hype is just paranoia but I believe the last version before the buyout is still available at Filehippo, Version 1.6.1, Build 474 (uncheck auto update) but wouldn't be hard to add a backdoor to it. Do people think addresses have been saved for the last year and 1/4 and one day the police are going to knock down everyone's door in unison. I also have a problem with badly written software being bought by the developer of Bittorrent and being one of the two most popular clients on the web, Azureus being the other. I haven't looked much but here's a couple of recent threads on the subject: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=26561&p=1 and http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19344171-uTorrent-question
