For some apparent reason moving files from my laptop to external hard drive stopped working. After couple of seconds into the process a dialog box pops up saying ?cannot read from the source file or disc? Does anyone know what?s causing that? Your help would be really appreciated. Thanks

are you using software or windows to do such?what is the drives brand and model/size? are you using usb or firewire or gypsy magic? what is your drive currently formated in? does this only happen on one computer, or any computer?

go my computer>right click on the drive in question> go properties> and to the tools tab ya go!

you will be prompted to reboot, the process maybe quick or take up to 4 hours:( leave the drive plugged in:D
tell us the results of the scan!

?cannot read from the source file or disc?

the file on the computers (internal hdd) hdd maybe protected or in use! seems to be a reading error not a writing error, therefore xp/internal hdd maybe at fault!

I?m trying to move some music files, just drug them from a Desktop folder to external hard drive (500MB)(G:) which is connected to the laptop by USB cable. I was able to do it before without any problems. The laptop has 1.8 GHz duo processor and 2038 MB of RAM, it?s a Sony VGN-FZ140E with Windows Vista as an OS. When attaching the USB cable it asks me if I want to scan and fix local drive (G:), when I accept, it says that it can?t do so while the drive is in use. When it comes to drive c:-properties-tools and checking for errors, after the reboot no error are found. I did not try the external hard drive on any other computer since I?m on a wheelchair and would have to go downstairs, I?m gonna ask my brother to check it when he comes home.

try and backup what on the drive onto your laptops HDD, then reformat the drive...it seems vista has been a bad girl and is causing you heart ache!

(500MB)(G:)

pls answer
do you mean 500GB? if its 500mb then its a usb flash stick not a hard drive:P

to reformat go

Start(the button thing), Run, diskmgmt.msc

(if its a 500MB flash usb stick then you will only have one option to reformat it in, you wont have NTFS available)

Also, if you get the external, up and running again, make sure that you don't just turn it off, after using it. Do the safe removal, via the icon that shows in the "tray".

GrandpaBW is right as always, unlike a a flash device which most people just junk right out of the drive an external drive must be set into a low power setting before being removed (modern drives and even some older ones wont let windows initialize them into this mode, which is ok they have an built in auto feature)
so this "safely remove hardware wizard" can be used for any usb device, it prepares both the OS and device for separation!

vista icon looks different, sry!

good stuff; just keep a eye on it; i had the same problem the other week with 2 brand new (500GB as it happens) drives, turned out they were bad so had them replaced and now no more problems. I'm very particular about safely removing all my usb stuff just as tripplite's picture there, if that's not done then data doesn't always get completely written to the disc

Ok, now new problem appeared. When transferring a large file into the G; drive it goes fine and at the end of the process a message pups up saying: ?cannot read from the source file or disc? I?ve tried to use the hard drive on another computer and same thing happens. I think there is definitely something wrong with the HD.

Yup, sounds like you need to have it replaced for another

try switching your usb connector, the pins on it might be messed up

also what the name/brand/version of your drive....sometime there are diagnostic and repair tools available on their websites that help solve issues with there drives that might not happen with others

alright for Iomega go here
https://iomega-na-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/iomega_na_en.cfg/php/enduser/cci/subproduct.php?p_prods=3&p_pv=1.3&prod_lvl1=3&p_sid=H8qv*N_i
find your drive and enter your OS and it should give you a download for some sort of tool to play around with....

NOTE:[reference] because this drive has been used on multiple computer
we've ruled out the possibility of driver issues:)

someone unplugged my i/o magic enclosure without doing the safe removal first. and now i get this error: "usb device not recognized. one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it." is there a fix for this? i've taken it out of it's case and tried connecting an IDE cable but it wouldn't fit. it used to work fine before.

dude thats the BSOD for usb issues, a quick fix before we go into trying
mess around with your drivers.....un plugg your computer from its power source...allow it to sit like this for 30minutes replug and login then plug the drive back in:)~this allows the computer to discharge its power from it motherboard, this has solved this usb issue many a times

btw: ok open a new thread with this issue, then we'll post in there with some more help:)
