Problems starting XP Service Pack 2

I have recently had some problems starting XP Home and Professional (SP2) and was wondering if anyone can help

For some reason everytime I boot-up windows at the moment, it gets to the XP start screen with the blue scroller bar, and the scrolling eventually stops and everything freezes up.

When I restart, I am presented with the 'Windows Apologizes for the inconvenience' screen, where I am presented with starting in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last good settings and start windows normally.

If I start normally, the process of freezing re-occurs. When I start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, a whole heap of messages come down the screen listing drivers etc and it, again, freezes.

HOWEVER, when I restart after this has happened and choose last good settings, the scroller bar starts getting slow at points but eventually keeps going and windows starts.

I have no problems running windows once it has loaded and I have run several virus/spyware scans. I recently had to downgrade my 8800GTS to a 7300GT (while the GTS is being repaired). Is this somehow the source of my problems? Is it a virus or spyware issue? Could it be a HDD issue? Anyone who knows how to fix this would be a great help.
