I have a HP pavillion dv6446us laptop with a dvd burner that quit working on me. I was using it last night when it stopped recognizing my blank discs. The tray will open and it sounds like it is reading it but does not ask me what to do with the disc. I go to "my computer" but the e-drive that is my burner is not there. I checked under my device manager but it is not there either. I tried searching for harware with no luck. I then tried to run norton system works but there were no problems that would cause this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a common problem. Are you using vista or XP?. What you need to do is clean your upper and lower registry files for the CDROM. For xp a quick way without actually having to go to the registry is this program.

I have Vista with service pack one. I just spent an hour on the phone with HP to fix this problem. They deleted registry keys and after it showed back up I had to delete it and restart my computer and it reinstalled. I tried to burn a disc with it but it failed to burn and then quit working again. I went to my device manager and tried to update the driver but it told me the one it had was the one i needed but it was for a cd drive not a dvd. I then uninstalled my dvd drive again and restarted but now it is just not showing it again.
