Can't Change Resolution

After re-formatting the HDD and re-installing Windows XP Home Edition, I can't change the resolution without going into the advanced monitor settings. When I do that it gives me a lower color setting if I pick a higher resolution. I have checked the drivers and I have the latest ones.
