cant read all dvd's with a sony DVP-NS77H

I have a sony DVP-NS77H and, which is an upconverter. and when i play my burned dvd's and dvds that are converted from avi, only half of them work. Normal dvd's work, but not the ones that i burned myself. they all are the same type of dvd's but i dont know why one works and the other doesnt.

can somebody please help me explain whats the problem?
also, if theres nothing that can be done, can somebody recommend a good upconverter that is less than 100USD?
