Hello, I just got the windows media center software for windows xp, and i'm very exicted! I got the WMC SDK and in the future i plan on working on an implementing different ripping, burning, and copying software into windows media center. (don't rush me, i have alot of studying to do first :S) My ultimate goal is to have a media center, easy enough for ANYONE to rip, copy, and burn dvds.
http://www.mymovies.dk/ - the "my movies" plugin rips and finds info for movies, but doesnt compress or burn, and i intend to have the movies in their own folders (complete with menus and extras!)
I have much knowlege in dvd copying, so i understand the different needs for compression and decoding software, but i have a few questions for you peeps!
Space is an issue! Dvd's are 7 gigs + sometimes! Since storage is not yet infinitely cheap, and I don't have a lot of money, It would be ideal if the disk could be compressed down to 2 gb or so. I understand the loss of quality i'm going to get, but i have compressed movies down to sub-gb avi files before and i was pleased with the quality.
The easiest thing to do for me would be to use DVD Shrink. Its easy, and does everything i want. My only problem is its lack of compression, its hard to get the files too far under the 4.7 gb without removing everything and completely destroying my main purpose!
I could in theory, set up an automation to rip the dvd, then use another program to compress the folder.
So my questions for you, friends.
What do you think of my plans??
Is a 2gb limit going to be too much compression for an entire dvd folder?
What program should i use to compress a folder (a program with fewer clicks would be better, to make the automation process easier :P)
I found a TB external harddrive online for under 200! Am i going to have problems with speed or buffering if i use this to store all of my movies?
Thank you guys so much for reading my post, if it wasn't for everything i have learned at afterdawn i would still be a N00B!

LOL, Thanks so much for your fast response, in a strange strange coincidence i also discovered how i could use that software to compress the files JUST the way i want them!!!
I wrote up an autoHotkey script that opens DVDfab and copys or rips the dvd using just two keyboard clicks(which can be customized to fit your imagine and needs)
"F12+C" is a one click copy command
"F12+X" is a one-click ripper tool (rips to default directory and rips the entire dvd to whatever you set your DVD9 size to be)
If you guys want to test it i can post a windows EXE if someone can help me find a place to host it!
if not here is the link for autohotkey http://www.autohotkey.com/download/AutoHotkeyInstall.exe
and here is my code
EDIT: be sure to set your DVD9 size to whatever size you want your output folder to be
F12 & c::
Run, C:\Program Files\DVDFab Platinum 4\DVDFabPlatinum.exe
WinWait, , Open DVD source: D:
WinWaitNotActive, , Open DVD source: D:
WinWait, DVDFab Platinum, DVD to DVD - Full Di
IfWinNotActive, DVDFab Platinum, DVD to DVD - Full Di, WinWaitActive, DVDFab Platinum, DVD to DVD - Full Di
MouseClick, left, 329, 295
Sleep, 100
MouseClick, left, 327, 357
Sleep, 100
MouseClick, left, 672, 550
Sleep, 100
F12 & x::
Run, C:\Program Files\DVDFab Platinum 4\DVDFabPlatinum.exe
WinWait, , Open DVD source: D:
WinWaitNotActive, , Open DVD source: D:
WinWait, DVDFab Platinum, DVD to DVD - Full Di
IfWinNotActive, DVDFab Platinum, DVD to DVD - Full Di, WinWaitActive, DVDFab Platinum, DVD to DVD - Full Di
WinWait, DVDFab Platinum,
IfWinNotActive, DVDFab Platinum, , WinActivate, DVDFab Platinum,
WinWaitActive, DVDFab Platinum,
MouseClick, left, 662, 82
Sleep, 100
MouseClick, left, 628, 121
Sleep, 100
MouseClick, left, 260, 298
Sleep, 100
MouseClick, left, 249, 367
Sleep, 100
MouseClick, left, 346, 492
Sleep, 100
MouseClick, left, 337, 537
Sleep, 100
MouseClick, left, 616, 532
Sleep, 100
This code works with DVDFabPlatinum 4.1.2.0
and probably some of the older ones too :P:P:P let me know what you guys think!

Thanks alot, I put the executable here if you wanna try it
http://myfreefilehosting.com/f/e8ab99a4fb_0.19MB
Use F12 + C to autocopy
Use F12 + C to autorip (size determined by dvd9 size setting in dvdfab)
be sure to set your DVD9 size to whatever size you want your output folder to be if you plan on using the autorip F12+X command
if someone could find me somewhere that i can link directly to the file that would be SCHWEET. your testing and input is worth so much to me :P
i'm going to bed.
