do i really need it? or can i just plug in the 20 pins and leave out the 4 pins left.

If your PSU comes with a 24-pin connector but there are only 20 pins on your motherboard then I wouldn't worry about it. If your motherboard has a 24-pin connector, however, you would be wise to use it.
