I am having a strange problem that I have been unable to resolve. I have a Lite-On DVD+-RW Model: SH-16A7S. It is a SATA DVD drive. I have never had any problems with it, but recently I had to re-install Windows XP Home edition and after the drive is recognized it is only available as a DVD-RAM drive. I am unable to burn CD's or DVD's. I have tried removing the drive and switching the SATA port is was connected to, but it still only shows up as a DVD-RAM drive. I am at a complete loss as to what to do and there is problem better help available here than through Lite-On customer support.

My system specs are:

I've been searching for information on this on the net and I have seen posts of people with the same problem and others that have said it shouldn't matter even if it is showing up as DVD-RAM.

When I right click on the drive under My Computer and select "Properties" there is no recording tab, however, when I open up ImgBurn I can burn a DVD on the same drive with no problems. So I guess it isn't such a big issue after all. Some posts said it is a problem with Windows XP, but before I re-installed XP it was showing up as a DVDRW.

I wrote too soon. I can burn a DVD with ImgBurn but I can't burn a CD with iTunes or make a data cd/dvd with Windows.

Has anyone experienced this and know how to correct it?

Thanks

you reinstalled xp with the xp disc? if it was an old one it probably didn't have the sp2 that your previous windows had, that maybe why your disc is labeled differently:)

since you just reinstalled windows we know it can't be a driver issue which is great:)

to check if you have sp2 right click on my computer and go properties

tripplite,

first, thanks for the reply. I have SP2 installed and I went through a ton of windows updates after re-installing. I'm trying a registry fix from http://dougknox.com/ and I'll see it that fixes the issue.

The registry fix I tried did not work. The drive is still showing up as a DVD-RAM drive.
