I was looking at the sales of TY discs i can get 200 8X TYs for $42 shipped which is a very good deal; but they are 8X.
Anyone know why TY still makes 8X? It's 2008. Also their 16X media is still pretty expensive 100 for $35 and it's on sale?! Kind of ridiculous.

I'm thinking it's a supply and demand thing. Taiyo is pretty well known as high quality. Heck look at eBay and how sellers advertise Taiyo - they know the name will get the most attention and probably the most sales. (of course it's probably the fake ty stuff they're selling)
Then really the only places you can buy genuine TY is at places like supermediastore and rima so I think they know they have us.
I've been buying the 16x -R TY from supermediastore for 29.99 + free shipping - 100 discs. They seem to offer this like ever 2 months or so.
edit - awful typos :)

At least they are taking USD and not charging in Euros, otherwise I would never be able to afford media.

Now 100 for $30 is not bad. Not great but not bad.

@binkie
Hey pretty lady, how ya doing. My gdaughter did the sig, how could I say no to a 7 yr old blonde beauty, lol.
I don't mind using the 8x TY, I still got my Plex's and they burn at double rated speed anyway, so the valuepak is still a bargain. But since TY is synonymous with quality the going rate is gonna be higher. Just my two cents :)

Wow - only 7 and she did that - great job!
The way I look at it is - Verbs on sale are like 100 for 22.99 + tax so say $24. Then I have to drive to the store - ugh - I hate shopping.
Now by paying $6 more I can order at my convenience from home and get my preferred brand - TY.
So I usually go that route plus I also buy the printables too and they aren't sold in store here that I know of.

@cincy - starting as a rebuild but who knows :) I'll post there shortly - I should try and keep my posts in this thread on topic :)
@BurningAs
I'm probably one of the few that only buys premium TY's - I've never tried the valueline - but that too is not a bad deal.
I'm hoping the 16x -R TY go on sale soon at supermediastore - I'm running just a bit low.
As soon as they do I'll post a link.

BurningAs, they post the Taiyo Yuden at 8x BUT most of the time you will get 16x . last batch i bought from SMS was 600 pack for 21 cents each and they ended up being the TYGO3s even though they were advertised as TYGO2s

BurningAs- As To why Taiyo Yudens still making or Atleast Selling/marketing 8X media ? Well could be a few factors !! Demand ?, Enormous Warehouses full 0f back stock ?, Or Their Intended market ! By that I mean that Although Occasionally we May find Major Branded media By The Big name companies That are or were OEM'ed for Them By Taiyo Yuden Like The all but Extinct MIJ Fuji's !and The sometimes still available but Getting scarce MIJ Sony Disc ! Or if your Lucky ennough To be Creaky or one of his Countrymen The Mythical VErbatim/Taiyo Yudens ! For the Most part Taiyo yuden media is aimed at the Proffesional/Duplicator or VideoHouse market - Those type of companies that Produce & or Distribute Industrial Video's Like safety or Training material . Basically any programming that would be beneficial if it were on DVD but The quantity need to be produced would not be large enough to have the DVD's Pressed as opposed to burned ! And Although I'm not very familiar with the Commercial duplicator end of the the Dvd market ! I would venture that there are still a lot of 8x Duplicators out there Vs. The higher speeds . Hence there is still a market for 8x Media . Or That's what I think could be the reason anyway ? Me I use 8x & 16x I still have a goodly supply of 8x & even more 16x and as long as the Finished product comes out Good that's all I consider important ! I normally only Burn at 8x anyways so it's not a big issue for me ! I even have a 100ct spindle of Verbatim 4x somewhere I caught on sale @ newegg long ago that I have'nt gotten too LOL!!!! presently I'm going througha Spindle of MIJ 16x Sony DVD-R /Taiyo yudens & They Burn great so I may order some from SMS/meritline if my Stock of Other Varius disc gets low ( Yeah It could happen!!!!!) LOL!!! anhow that's my .02cents on the issue or 1.25cents adjusted for inflation !!!! Cheers & Binkie your just being modest your are Very knowledgeable !!!

There is another glaring reason for the continuing of 8X media.. a huge number of older high end standalone dvd players and recorders just can't see the 16X disks.
I have seen at least 10 Sony and Panasonic dvd recorders with this problem in just the last month. None of my dvd players will read 16x disks, either + or - though my burners quite like them..
Disk manufacturers aren't stupid. They will be getting feedback from people like sony etc who will be telling them about the problems.
Also remember.. the majority of the worlds computer users are using hardware 3 years old and older. A lot of those machines can't burn at 16x regardless of the media being available because the IDE channels just aren't fast enough... Just because on this site a lot of people can afford the latest and greatest doesn't mean everybody can. Reality is the majority can't and are using hand downs and second hand kit.. I have just upgraded to a 5 year old machine, replacing a 10 year old one, and it balks when trying to burn data disks at 16x

I agree, varnull makes good sense. I just got a new lightscribe LG external with 20x DVD burn capability, yet it will only burn 48x on CD, when mfr specs are now 52x. Also, got a newer lite-on which will burn 16x DVD but only 48x CD. I have not been having a problem with my 16x Verbs on my old players, or even my old NEC 1300a, but that is because Verb has had consistent media, which is why you buy and pay the price. Same with TY no problems, but they are also consistent in quality merchandise.

arniebear- You have hit the Nail on the Proverbial Head !!! That is what separates The Good media from The Crap ,Junk ,& also Rans ! Good Brands like Taiyo Yuden , Verbatim, Sony * perhaps a Few others have a Consistently Good Product ! you can count on them to Be equally Good pretty much from Spindle to Spindle !!! Whereas other brands that are only looking at Profit margins and short time Profit Change Oem Manufactures From month to month or Perhaps even from Production run to Production Run !!! Memorex for example You never know from spindle to spindle who's making their media ? so You can't depend on them being anything but Inconsistant !!!! Or if they are consistant in anything it's that they're consistantly bad for the reasons mentioned above ! I'm not Picking on Memorex per se only they are a prime example of what we're talking about ! But In the end you pays your money & takes you chances ! If You buy good media you leave less to chance !!! Cheers arniebear

Thanks Bigtoxy, DVD media has come down in price since I started buying I remember my first spindle cost like 40.00 bucks for 25....and that was, sob, Memorex. Which was my first and last purchase ever, none of them worked. As you stated you can count on consistency with Memorex too, they are consistently bad, lol. I am willing though to pay the few bucks more for TY and know my burn will come out, don't even have to watch it. Also, I think the price remains a little high because so many posters on Forums, our and others, recommend it. The sellers see this and keep the price up a little because of the demand.
@ZoSo
I usually burn my CD's at 24x. I guess my question is why bother to put out 52x media when many burners don't burn at 52x and IMHO is way too fast for a CD burn?

the 52x is a marketing ploy and yeah 52x is way to fast 24x max for me but most the time i just burn at 16x as i said
